DIY bed frame & wood headboard with natural finishes

Last summer, inspired byThis Amazing Book: The Magic of Tidying Up That Changes Your Life, we decided to embark on an epic analysis of everything, the first things we gave up were giant mattresses and box springs. Professor! So we justspent the whole year sleeping on the floor.

When I share my DIY bed frame ideas withour dream mattress company sleeping on latex, they generously sent us great gifts to support our DIY project:a heavenly mattress made of 100% natural latex foam, certified organic cotton and organic New Zealand wool!Plus two delightslatex pillow!

My husband is always supportive. This time, he not only supported but alsobeyond the excitement of making this bed surprisingly easy and how he, a natural perfectionist, loves our new sturdy and beautiful DIY bed!

Step 1: Choose the right wood to frame the bed (very important!!)

DIY simple bed frame & wood headboard modern farmhouse and pottery barn west elm style

Do notuse pressure treated wood, it may contain chemicals you don’t want!

To build a beautiful and sturdy wooden bed frame, we must choose a wood that has durability, workability and beauty.Choose wood with intact structure, tight grain, small nicks, few splits and twists, and no splits.

The buttons are very dense, making them difficult to pierce and cut.Study the planto see where the screws are and choose boards with few knots in those areas.

choose wood with nice grain

We usedDouglas firfor our DIY wooden bed posts and rails. It is a common construction/structural timber on the West Coast. The wood is very hard and strong.southern golden pine/spruce firAlso a great popular choice on the east coast. Other great options arePoplar, Ash, Oak, Old, Birch, Cherry, andmaple.

If you use other woods, make sure the wood is good for structural use. Don’t rely solely on the name “hardwood” or “softwood”.An example of hardwoods and softwoods:Doug Fir is a super strong softwood, while basswood, a hardwood, is super soft and won’t hold screws meaning the bed frame will fall off!

Step 2: Gather materials and tools.

When we showed a Home Depot employee our DIY bed frame plan, he got excited about us and carefully cut out most of the wood for us, which made the job even easier. Take plans and cut lists with you! 🙂Some of our resource links are affiliate links, see full information here.

4×4 Items:(2) 4×4 @ 1’2″ L, (2) 4×4 @ 4’6″ L {NOTE: Plans show these two posts above the nightstand at 4’5″, but one extra inch for flexibility when arranging the headboard}, cut from (1) 4×4 @ 12′

2 × 6 rail:(2) 2 × 6 @ 4’8 , (2) 2 × 6 @ 6’6 , cut from (2) 2 × 6 @ 12 (Some readers asked to use 1 × 6 or 1 × 8. They tend warp, especially over long lengthsWood workshop, they often carry more variety than hardware stores! if not, can glue 2 pieces of 1×6 instead!

Plywood bar and spacers:(14) 3 wide x 5 long. We used 1/2 inch thick PureBond plywoodis an excellent quality, formaldehyde-free plywood. The sheet of paper measures 4’x8′. The Home Depot cuts it first into 4’x5 slats, then into 3×5 slatsfor us. Then we cut one of them into smaller spacers.

Supported slats:(2) 2 × 2 @ 6’3, cut from (2) 2 × 2 @ 8 , save extra to use for rope hanger

Follow best practices to build safely and smartly. Follow the safety instructions for each tool. Work on a flat, clean surface free of debris or debris. Always use a straight board. Always wear goggles and hearing protection. And don’t forget to check the square after each step!

IMPORTANT:Once all the wood is cut, check that the pieces are the same length between them:this will ensure that our DIY bed frame is square and that all the pieces fit. Consistency is more important than numbers!

For example:all 1x4s on the headboardmust be the same lengthlike two 2x6s on the headboard and the legs. It’s okay if they’re all 1/4″ smaller than what’s written on the plan (this DIY platform bed frame is forgivable if you go 1/2″ down to 1″). That is to sayDO NOTOK so some of them are bigger than 1/8 and some are 1/8 smaller than the 4’8″ on the plan.

Sand all cutting and contact surfaces to a nice smooth finish. If you want to paint or stain wood, now is a good time.

Step 3: How to install the bed rail bracket

How to install bed rail brackets

This important step is not difficult, but it requirespatient and precise. If you do it right, the rest of the DIY bed frame will be super easy! See details on how to install the bed rail bracket.

These surface mount bed rail bracketsthere are 4 pairs. thebrackets with slotswalk on four bedposts, andhooks with “claw”mounts on two 2×6 6’6″ long side rails, one on each end.

measure bed rail brackets

Place a 2×6 rail (or use a smaller piece of 2×6 scrap) on a foot jetty, the top of the rail should be level with the top of the post. The end faces of the rail and the post touch each other during assembly.

Place a pair of hooks in the locked position on the posts and rails, andMark the outer edges of the bracket and carefully drill each hole.

easy DIY bed rail brackets

First, pre-drill each marked hole and attachbracesonto a 4×4 post using a 2″ to 3″ long screw. If you deviate, the track will not line up with the column. Don’t forget to check every step! We usedThese 2 1/2 screws (for use with a star drill)to attach brackets to 4x4s.

It happened to us once. We filled the holes withJB Weld Wood Puttyand do it again.

jb weld wood putty Have some JB Weld wood putty on hand, you may need it to fix mistakes!

Next, attach the “claw” bracket to one end of the rail, making sure everything is square and flat. We used1 1/4″ screwto attach brackets to 2x6s.

Do not overtighten the screws on the “claw” bracket. At this point, we want to easily hook and remove these brackets. In the last step where weput parentheses together, we will tighten the screws to make the bed solid as a rock!

how to install bed rail brackets

Repeat this process until all brackets are installed. Keep checking to make sure everything lines up correctly in all dimensions: height, width, and depth.

Step 4: Frame the wooden bed and headboard

Point:It’s easiest to drill all the holes in the bag first, then screw the pieces together.

When constructing the headboard,to createcentral controlsfirst, then attach it to the posts, then add the 2×4 top piece and 2×6 bottom rail. See diagram below.

To construct the table legs, use a 2.5-inch hole screw to attach the 2×6 posts to the 4×4 posts, making sure they are flat at the top and facing outward.

Because our goal is to keep this DIY bed frameeasy to assemble and disassembleAs we move I designed it to bar the bed and support the 2×4 chain.held in place by brackets and spacers, instead of attaching to the bed rail.

building foot board

The key here is careful measurementso the bed rails are only 1/4″ below the ends of the 2×6 side rails. You can leave them flat with the top of the 2×6 side rails, we chose an offset of 1 /4.″ for a cleaner look and 1/4 does not affect how the mattress lays on the base bed.

U-shaped slots for 2×4 cable sets.made from 2×2, bolted to the 2×6 rails of the headboard and footboard. The 2×4 simply slides sideways into the slots. You can also use 2×4 hangers like this. Our reader Dan recommends usingBoth wood glue and strong screws for U-mounting.channels, because they carry a lot of weight. It’s a good idea!

free woodworking plan to build bed with slats to support mattress

The 3-inch-wide bars are supported by 2×4 and 2×2 tie rods that are attached to the side rails with screws. The slats are held in place with 3″ wide spacers cut from extra bar. The spacers are spaced 3 1/8″ apart for a slight wobble room.

When you glue or screw the spacers to the 2×2 spacers, stack two 2×6 side rails, so the pads are also perfectly aligned. See the image above.

Step 5: Assemble the DIY wooden bed frame

assemble the DIY wood bed frame

It’s time to enjoy the sweet fruit of our DIY wooden bed frame assembly and work!

First, place the headboard and footboard where you want the bed to be. Lift the 2×6 side rails and slide the bed rail clips into the slots so they lock into place. Two people can do this quite easily.

If you have any difficulties,Slightly loosen the screw of the “claw” support.Afterparentheses are attached, tighten the screws to make the bed sturdy and solid.

Bonus Tip: How to adapt this DIY bed frame plan to any size bed, with or without a headboard.

This do-it-yourself queen bed frame plan can be easily adapted to create beds of other sizes using the reference chart below.

For example:to constructking size bed frame, simply add 16 inches to the length of all horizontal components: 1x4s, 2x4s, and 2x6s on the headboard, bed rail, and 2x6s on the headboard.

To constructdouble bed frame, reducing the length of all components horizontally by 21 inches: 1x4s, 2x4s and 2x6s on the headboard, bed rail and 2x6s on the headboard. And 6 inches of the length of 2×6 side rails and 2×4 slings (you only need a lanyard because the double bed is much narrower.
