In this simple wiring diagram, several sockets were connected in parallel. Each outlet is independent of the other as they are connected by separate cables. In this wiring, the operation of the socket is divided into two parts, i.e. the upper socket is controlled via a switch while the lower part is always hot. To do this, simply remove the splitter fin (tab) between the copper (hot) terminals as shown in the picture. The switch output (hot) is connected to the upper copper terminal, and the lower hot terminal should be connected to the switch input hot wire.

Simply put, a common hot wire should be connected to the first terminal of the switch and the bottom hot terminal of the outlet. The second (hot) terminal of the switch should be connected to the top hot terminal of the outlet. Finally, connect the neutral wire and ground wire accordingly as shown in the picture below.

In this way, the ON/OFF operation of the upper part (outlet) is controlled by the switch while the lower outlet is always hot and active.

AFCI and GFCI wiring to outlet

In this wiring, the plug is connected to the load terminals of the GFCI, where the GFCI is connected to the load terminal of the AFCI. Standard outlets are both AFCI and GFCI protected. You can use both AFCI/GFCI protection in one unit instead of two outlets for AFCI and GFCI protection. This wiring is also referred to as serial receptacle wiring which is only accepted in the case of AFCI or GFCI.

Dual outlet wiring from 240V to 120V

In this wiring, the hot terminals of the 1st and 3rd sockets are connected to line 2 (blue) and the hot terminals of the second and last sockets are connected to line 1 (red). The neutral is connected from the main circuit breaker to all the neutral terminals of the socket. The ground wire is connected to the sockets as shown in the figure. In this way, all double sockets are connected to a single 240V line and can supply 120V to appliances.

In this particular wiring, a double outlet is connected to both 120V and 240V, with the top outlet supplying 120V and the bottom outlet supplying 240V supply voltage. Special 5031-I, 5842-I sockets are used in this type of wiring.

To do this, connect line 1 and line 2 respectively to the lower hot terminals. Neutral and ground connections are for copper terminals and ground terminals respectively.

Keep in mind that you cannot run more than 20A at a time from a single outlet due to switch wattage (wattage = voltage x current). For example, if a 15 Amp air conditioner is connected to an upper 240 V outlet and a 10 Amp, 120 V heater to the lower terminal, the overall amperage will exceed the switch rating. Alternatively, you can plug a 100W bulb into a lower 120V outlet whether or not the upper 240V, 15A outlet will work in draughty conditions as the total amperage does not exceed 20A for the outlet shown.

In this wiring, a 20A, 120V outlet is connected to the 120V supply via the hot, neutral, and ground wire.
