Multi-read content how to make room soundproof from outside noise

A lot of the advice I’ve gathered in my articles is to make sure thatno sound can escape the room you are soundproofing. However, there are some differences between these tips and the methods you will use toprevent outside noise from entering your home.

For example, soundproof foam productsaims to improve the acoustics inside the room, rather than keeping the sound outside. In this article, I’ll tell you what soundproofing techniques you can use to turn your home or apartment into the quiet sanctuary you need.

As you know, there are two types of sound we need to be concerned about: airborne noise and collision noise. Understanding the difference between the two will allow you to realize which method of soundproofing you should implement in your home. So if you’re only dealing with airborne noise, like children laughing outside the window or dogs barking, you’ll need to focus on sealing air spaces in walls and around windows and doors.

How to soundproof a room from outside noise.

However, impact noise has more of a bass quality, so it really shakes the structure of your home. So if you have rumbling cars or trucks or a construction site nearby, you’ll want to separate your walls, floors, and ceilings from the building structure to prevent shaking.

You should keep the different types of noise in mind when reading my suggestions for soundproofing different areas around a room. Let’s start with the area that is arguably the most vulnerable – the window.

“HURRY UP”

1. First, Soundproof for Windows2. Soundproof exterior walls 3. Soundproof your exterior doors 4. Soundproof your garden5. Finally, soundproof the ceiling and floor

1. First, soundproof windows

Windows are undoubtedly the most fragile part of our house in terms of soundproofing. And if you have very old wooden windows, there’s really nothing you can do to soundproof them. I have already written an article onsoundproof windows, but the gist is quite simple.

So you should start by checking your existing windows:

  • Check if yes
  • draft around the window frame
  • – if you can feel the breeze, you can hear the sound.
  • See if
  • air enters through closed windows
  • . Simply move your hand around the perimeter of the window. Using candles can also work, if you’re careful – just watch to see if the flame flickers.
  • Glass control
  • – it may be too thin to sustain the sound. In this case, consider loading new windows or at least loading dual pane windows.

Basically, it’s best to buy double-glazed PVC windows if you can. You can also installinsert a window, is another layer of transparent glass or acrylic.

However, as someone who has spent many nights sleeping under a 40-year-old wooden window, I also understand that sometimes we cannot change the window for various reasons. In this case, I recommend that you do your best to eliminate the air gaps:

  • Fill in the gaps with
  • sound caulking
  • .
  • Use closed cells
  • weather foam tape
  • For a quick and easy fix, you can always do this
  • soundproof window socket
  • .
  • If the windows themselves do not close properly, you may experience
  • Rubber seal
  • . These thin rubber strips (usually self-adhesive) will ensure that your windows are sealed tight enough to keep air out.
  • Cave
  • heavy soundproof curtain
  • .

2. Soundproof exterior walls

Soundproof walls are similar to soundproof windows, in the first place you shouldmake sure there are no cracks or gaps. You can just check for gaps and seal them with acoustic caulk and hope thatsoundproof blanketand a clever rearrangement will take care of the rest. In fact, I wrote an entire article about 6 different ways touse soundproof blankets in your home.

However, if you think hammering a few blankets into the wall won’t be enough, you can soundproof the walls from studs. I wrote another article onThe best way to soundproof a wallusesound proofing, MLV, elastic channel, soundproof drywall and Green Glue. Of course, you will only be able to use this method if you own the house or have permission to change the walls.

If you can only afford to repair a few walls, you shouldPay particular attention to the exterior and adjoining walls. And, as I mentioned before, you can only fortify them by adding mass to the most vulnerable. You can do this by aligning them withbookcases, cupboards, paintings and tapestries.

You may think you will, but no: you still have toconsider the vents! If you decide, you absolutely canSeal them with drywall glue and soundproof. Or, you can rely on soundproof blankets to take care of it. Of course, if you need airflow and are in the mood for a DIY project, you can also create a sonic maze inside the vents – check out the linked article to see how.

3. Soundproof exterior doors

Doors can be an important part of this puzzle for a number of reasons:

  • If you live in an apartment,
  • front door
  • can emit sound from hallway or stairs.
  • In a house, we can find a way to soundproof
  • your bedroom door
  • .
  • If you are working on a part with
  • balcony or porch entrance
  • , noise can be emitted directly from the door.

The fix is pretty straightforward and predictable at this point in the article. First try to close all air gaps. You can usesound puttyjust like you would on a window – around the door frame, between the frame and the wall.weather resistant foam tapecan also be used in the same way.

If the door is a bit high, you can also install rubbersweep the door. Alternatively, you can use rubber gaskets all over the inside of the door where the door meets the frame.

Finally, if you are working onbalcony or patio doorand it has a glass part, you can pretty muchtreat it like a windowand follow my advice on soundproof windows. And, if you need more information aboutsoundproof door, you can click on the article that I discussed in more detail.

4. Soundproof your garden

Additionally, you can make some changes to theoutside your house(in your yard, if you have one) to ensure that the least amount of noise reaches you inside.

On the one hand, you cangraft trees or tall, bushy treesnear your window. It really won’t do much, but it canreduce harsh noiseswhen they pass through the foliage.

How to soundproof an outdoor fence with MLV.

Something that might be a bit more efficient isbuild a high fence- especially if your house is aligned or lower than the fence. A thick fence will also absorb some of the effects of deeper sound. And it will be twice as effective if youinstall MLV on it.

Now the noise can also be caused by your dog. If the little guy hasn’t learned to bark yet, he can make your days pretty tough. And I can imagine what your nights would be like if the pup slept outside. Well, there are several ways to approachsoundproof your outdoor crib:

  • Line the floor and walls of the outdoor nursery with soundproof blankets.
  • For a smaller doghouse, use soft cushions and pillows for the floor and cover them with a large soundproof blanket outside the house.
  • Get one of the soft crates and cradles I recommended in the linked article.
  • Consider bringing your dog inside, at least at night. He’ll feel safer and less irritable if he knows where you are.

5. Finally, soundproof the ceiling and floor

Soundproof floors and ceilingsmay not be absolutely necessary to eliminate external noise. For example, if you live in a house, your upstairs and downstairs neighbors may be family or roommates.

However, in an apartment building, you may need to increase your soundproofing efforts. Your main concern is probably the impact sound of your upstairs neighbors’ footsteps.

Fortunately, I happened to write an article onsoundproof ceiling. One tip I have for eliminating noise is to build a drop ceiling. This will help distribute the sound between the two layers of drywall.

And, of course, if you don’t want to cause the same problems for your downstairs neighbors, you can do a fewSteps to soundproof the floor. You can do this easily by spreading rubber mats, MLVs or a layer of foam under thick mats.

Final Thoughts on Blocking Outside Noise

Getting rid of extra noise can greatly improve our lives. After all, that’s the whole point of this site. However, most of the time there is no way to remove all the noise. To do this, you have to build a completely airtight room, which is not very practical.

It is therefore possible that outside noises still reach your room. Even after trying all of the tips on this list, you may still need to findAlternative solutions. For example, you can getnoise canceling ear plugs, or onewhite noise machineto block out distracting sounds.

Ultimately, any of these solutions should work – and if not, you should probably try to find the source of the noise. After all, if your house shakes too much every time a car drives by, you might have a bigger problem. So follow some of the simpler tips in this article first, and if that doesn’t solve the exterior noise levels, you may need to do some more serious building work.
