Multi-read content what is considered low voc in paint

Choosing a paint for your home that is safe for the whole family and indoor air quality can seem like a daunting task. Is there a real difference between “low VOC” and “no VOC”? What is “outgassing”? If you choose the safest paint, will it stand the test of time?

Below is a breakdown of the factors related tobuy green paint.

VOC

Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs, are carbon-containing substances that readily convert to vapors or gases. They are found in paints, coatings and cleaning products.

In coatings, solvents containing VOCs contribute to the quality of application and drying, so that a substance such as paint does not form streaks on the surface. However, they can cause respiratory problems andhealth problemsfor occupants, when used indoors. Their release into the indoor atmosphere is called venting and it happens over time, not just during painting or drying.

Paint with tag”Low VOC”should contain less50 grams per litervolatile compounds, if they meet Green Seal standards. Since there is no single regulatory standard, the low VOC designation means many different things depending on which agency certifies it, but 50 grams is a common bar for architectural flat paint. You can compare standards for other types of coatings at the South Coast Influential Air Quality Management DistrictRule 1113. Most low VOC paints are rubber based. Adding pigment to a base paint can also increase its VOC levels to additional levels10 grams per liter.

Paint with tag”VOC-free”may actually contain small amounts of VOCs – typically less than 5 grams per litre. There is also completelynatural paint, such as milk paint or chalk paint, do not contain VOCs.

Reliability

Sometimes you have to compromise: lower VOCs for more frequent paint applications. The substances that can make your paint more toxic are sometimes also the ones that make it dry faster and stick better, longer. For example, if you are painting a nursery wall with milk, it may take a few days to dry and may need repainting sooner.

However, paint formulations are constantly changing and improving. Chances are the paint you buy today has solved some of the formulation problems of two years ago. Companies are increasingly focusing on creating a variety of low or zero VOC interior paints.
