What is PVC?

First, make sure you know what PVC is. The letters representpolyvinyl chloride, a synthetic resin polymer.

Today it is a popular material for interior drain (sewage) pipes because it is lightweight, durable and soundproof. It is also used for underground sewers. However, for outdoor drainage systems where freezing temperatures are common, ABS (another plastic) may be a better solution.

And don’t worry. Although its real name sounds scary and toxic, PVC is completely safe in sewage and plumbing systems. But it is not the pipe material used in potable (potable) water supply lines.

How to Repair PVC Pipes

The following four key steps are required to repair or replace broken or cracked PVC pipes in your home. Just keep in mind that you shouldn’t let water get into your home while you’re making repairs. If possible, turn off the main water supply valve before you begin.

1. Remove the damaged part

  • Wrap a piece of paper around the PVC pipe like a “saw guide”.
  • Cut perpendicularly through the pipe with a hacksaw about 1 to 2 inches on either side of the damaged area.
  • If the pipe runs directly to the drain, place newspaper or paper towels in vertical pipes to block dangerous leaks in your workspace.
  • Before moving on to the next step, make sure all the water is drained from the hose, then clean and dry the ends with an old rag.

cutting pvc pipe - how to repair pvc pipe

2. Cut the replacement tube

  • Install slip joints on each riser (undamaged pipes remain in place).
  • Carefully measure the clearance and transfer the measurement to the new piece of PVC pipe.
  • Cut the replacement part to the required length using a hand saw and a cutting box. Use the paper guide as in step 1 to make sure the cut is square.

Angle cutters are used with a hacksaw (or handsaw) to produce perfectly smooth, straight or angled cuts. When joining two pieces of pipe, a perfect fit is important to prevent leaks.

3. Apply solvent cement

  • Using a sharp knife, cut and bevel the ends of the PVC pipes. This will help the water run off and improve the welding performance of the solvent cement.
  • Apply a heavy coat of PVC Primer Solvent to the ends of the pipes: apply to the outside of the existing PVC pipe and to the inside of the new PVC pipe. The primer will soften the PVC pipe, making it easier to install.
  • To make the job easier, use a 1.5 inch paint brush or a 3 inch wide seam applicator.

priming pvc pipe - how to repair pvc pipeMake sure the original solvent is on the outside of the existing PVC pipe and inside the new PVC pipe.

4. Install replacement piping

  • Work quickly, before the cement sets, lift the new pipe into place and slide one fitting over its fitting, then slide the other.
  • Each fitting should cover an equal amount of old and new pipes.
  • Give each joint a quarter turn to spread the cement. Then use a clean rag to wipe off the excess cement.
  • Allow the seal to harden (at least two hours), then run water through the drain line.
  • If it leaks, the seals are not fitted correctly. Cut the replacement pipes and fittings and start over.

fitting pipe - how to repair pvc pipeMake sure the fit is secure and you’ve cemented it by giving the new pipe a half turn (you can do this once or twice) before putting it in place.
