Multi-read content how to get old paint off wood floors

Hardwood floorsis one of the most popular luxury flooring options with an undeniably authentic and natural beauty. Anyone will do whatever it takes to maintain an attractive glossy look on hardwood floors. Sometimes you may notice drips of paint that you don’t see during the painting process. Finding solutions for removing paint from hardwood floors can never be a walk in the park. Read on as you learn how to remove old paint from hardwood in a few simple steps and save the cost of hiring a professional to clean up dried paint drips.

Materials you will need

  • Fabric
  • Clean rags
  • Dishwasher soap
  • Drink water
  • artificial alcohol
  • Dull knife
  • Scrub brush
  • Paint thinner
  • Facial Cleansing Pads

Prepare the ground

Surface preparation is the first step before undertaking any surface hardening activity. You clean the surface of dust, dirt and grit to make sure paint drips are visible. Check if the paint is water-based or oil-based before doing any other work.

You can dissolve the paint with a solvent or scrape it off with a scraper. Removing old oil-based paint is more difficult than acrylic paint because some of the effective solvents used to dissolve the paint can also damage the floor finish. Always try other methods of removing paint from hardwood without chemicals before using commercial solvents.

Here are some of the most effective methods for removing paint from wood floors.

scrape hard paint

This method is most effective for water-based paints. You can use a plastic scraper to remove the paint without damaging the parquet surface. You can also hit the scraper with a hammer in case the paint is hard.

In case the paint dries in the joints between the two boards, you can use a scissor scraper to gently remove the paint in the bumps and sides of the boards. However, some oil-based paints will dry hard. Therefore, try warming the spot with a hair dryer by turning the heat all the way up and holding it about 3 inches off the floor for 20 seconds.

Never use heat guns as they can damage the finish. It is also important to know how to remove paint from wooden floors without damaging the finish. Do not scratch the floor too much to avoid further damage to the finish.

Use a mild detergent

You can put a drop of dish soap on a damp paper and use a paper towel to wet each part of the stain.

Consider rubbing over and over for a few minutes and using a damp, dry cloth to wipe away the stain. The paint should now come off the floor easily as the soapy water softens. Finally, use a dull knife to scrape off the paint and sweep the surface of the floor.

Use a commercial stripper

It’s a faster way to remove dried paint from hardwood floors. Visit one of the home improvement stores and buy some paint stripper. Use a cotton ball or Q-tip to dip the paint stripper solution directly onto the dried paint and let the product soak for about 15 minutes to break down the paint. Be careful not to apply stripper to uncolored areas.

Use a paper towel or rag to wipe up loose paint and cleaning solution. If the floor is greasy, you can use soapy water to wipe it to avoid slipping.

How to remove old varnish from hardwoodUse denatured alcohol

Alcohol is another alternative you can try at home. First, use a rag to rub the denatured alcohol into the stain and allow it to soak in the paint for about 20 to 30 minutes, allowing the paint stain to absorb enough alcohol to come off easily.

Use a brush to rub the paint in a back and forth motion and sweep the excess paint off the floor. Be sure to allow the surface to dry after completing the job.

Use a facial cleanser

Buy alcohol-based cleansers at your local pharmacy. Then rub the stain with one of the stripping pads. When the cleaning pad dries, use a new one until you have removed the paint from the floor.

Remove old paint from hardwood floors using paint thinner

Using thinner is a last resort for removing paint from stained wood floors. Be extremely careful as thinner can easily strip the finish. Make sure the room you are going to work in is well ventilated. Dip a small portion of the rag in thinner and rub the paint stain until all the paint is removed.

Alternatively, you can use mineral oil if you are not comfortable with the smell of paint thinner. This method is very fast for removing oil-based paint from hardwood. Never use thinner on water-based paint.

In this video, I show you how to get paint off of hardwood floors easily. It is a simple process and I use a natural cleaner, along with some elbow grease to get the job done. Many people will tell you to use harsh cleaners and chemicals to remove the paint, but it can be done with some natural ingredients, you just have to be willing to scrub a little. With that being said, getting all of the pain off of your hardwood flooring can be a daunting task, so be sure to cover up as much of the floor as possible when you are painting to reduce the amount of cleaning up that you have to do.
