Often when we come home with sap stains, we can’t even remember how we got them – crawling through a few cut tree trunks or reaching out to steady the trunk are often all we need. We have to do. But while it’s a pain to spot a sticky, sticky rosin stain on your hiking gear, if you don’t know how to remove it, it can be very expensive. Fortunately, removing sap stains from hiking clothes can be time-consuming, but not difficult. All you need are a few simple tools and household items to get your outfit looking like new again.

Why is the sap tree flexible?

All trees have sap, a watery mixture of carbohydrates and minerals, which acts like the blood of the tree, carrying nutrients through its trunk and branches. Although we often colloquially refer to the sticky substance you find on pines and other evergreens as “resin”, it is actually tree sap. This thick, sticky substance acts like platelets in the human body: when a plant is injured by insects, hurricanes, or human impact, the resinous substance exudes and hardens into “crusts” on the wound.

Unfortunately for anyone who puts it on their clothes or in their hair, turpentine will solidify as it dries. If you’ve ever seen an insect trapped inside a block of amber, you’ve seen how difficult it can be. These “stones” are just blocks of plastic that have been fossilized over millennia.

Supplies for cleaning sap from hiking clothes

You won’t need a lot of specialized equipment or chemicals to clean sap stains. In fact, you probably have most of what you need:

  • Dull scrapers (butter knives, spoons, etc.)
  • A solvent to pre-treat the fabric (alcohol works well)
  • Old rag or toothbrush
  • Laundry powder or laundry soap

How to remove sap from hiking clothes at home

Before attempting to wash turpentine off your clothes, remove as much of the turpentine as possible. Take a blunt scraper – a spoon or butter knife works well – and get to work loosening up the dried turpentine. If the sap is still pasty or has a lot of it, try applying an ice-filled sanitary napkin to the affected area to firm it up and help the skin peel off.

Next, you need to pre-treat the area where the sap is soaked. Any stain remover will do; just be sure to test it in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it doesn’t damage or discolor fabric. Rubbing alcohol is a safe and gentle option. Avoid using acetone (nail polish remover) as its harsh chemicals can damage the fibers of your clothes, especially some synthetic fabrics. Some hikers swear by oil – peanut butter and canola oil are favorites – but remember that it leaves a stain that you’ll have to deal with later. Whichever stain remover you choose, use a cloth or toothbrush and let it soak in for 15-20 minutes.

Once the solvent has had time to work, it’s time to wash your clothes. Wash them at the highest temperature the item will accept (check the label) with detergent. At the end of the cycle, check your clothes to see if the stain is gone. if not, repeat the process until the sap is gone. Whatever you do, don’t throw your stained clothes in the dryer until you’ve removed all the sap. Otherwise, the heat will bake the sap into the fabric, making them more or less impossible to remove.

How to get tree sap out of hiking clothes

On a long trip? You may not want to wait to get the sap out of your clothes, lest it get onto your expensive coat or sleeping bag. Without a washing machine, you’ll have to get a little creative.

Start as above scraping off as much sap as you can (the blunt side of the folding knife also works as a camping spatula, assuming you don’t mind cleaning it up afterwards). Next, take a hand sanitizer or alcohol prep swab from the first aid kit and blot the cloth with your fingers, a tissue, or a tissue. (If you’re carrying a jar, a strong enough hose will also do.) Once the alcohol is absorbed, rinse the affected area with lukewarm water, preferably lukewarm water. Repeat as needed.

Remove sap from wool

If the garment you’re trying to clean is wool, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, avoid any stain removers or enzyme-based cleaners: Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool is made up largely of protein, and enzyme cleaners can weaken your fibers. For finer merino fabrics, you will need to be more gentle when scraping and brushing the fabric so as not to tear the fabric (for delicate garments, prevention is the best strategy).

What to do if you have sap on your skin or hair

If you clean the sap from your clothes, it is best to put some on your body as well. Fortunately, the process of extracting the sap from your skin or hair is no different from removing it from your clothes. Start by using hand sanitizer to start removing the sap, then simply wash with soap or shampoo in warm to hot water.

As soon as sap dries, it sticks to the fibers of your clothes and becomes a stubborn stain. Sap is easiest to remove when treated immediately, but you don’t have to throw away stained clothing. Rubbing alcohol, stain removers, and detergent are effective at breaking up a stain. Washing your clothing normally gets rid of any remaining traces of the stain. As long as you don’t set a stain by drying it, your clothing will look fresh once again.
