Multi-read content how to water garden when away

Don’t forget yoursoutdoor treewhen you’re on vacation this summer, they’ll need to be watered while you’re away, or you might come home to a not-so-healthy garden.

water outdoor plants

If you can’t rely on your neighbors to feed your plants and don’t want to expect rain, try these handy ideas for watering your garden while on vacation.

Water thoroughly and mulch outdoor plants

If you’re only going away for a few days, your plants will probably be fine if you give them a good soak before you go.

Mulch is crucial for this to work, as mulched plants lose much less moisture than unprotected plants. Make sure your garden bed has two to three inches of coverage. Don’t want to add more mulch, as too much mulch can prevent oxygen from reaching the plant’s roots.

After watering, use a shovel or long screwdriver to dig up the soil under the mulch. Is the ground wet a few centimeters below the surface? If so, your outdoor plants will last through your short break.

Use a rain bucket and soaker spigot to water your plants outdoors

For long trips, watering and mulching may not be enough to keep your plants healthy. The rain barrel can supply water continuously.

Attach a soaker hose to arain barreland thread the hose into your garden. The stored water will slowly flow through the faucet and seep into the ground. You’ll still need to water it thoroughly before you leave, but this method can keep your outdoor plants fully utilized while you enjoy a longer stay.

If it doesn’t rain enough to fill your water tank, you can fill it from the tap – that kind of cheat is fine at a time like this.

Keep outdoor plants watered with plastic bottles

If you don’t have a rain barrel, you can make your own self-watering system using recycled plastic bottles.

Remove the cap from a few empty soda bottles and poke a small hole in each bottle with your fingernail. Or simply replace the caps with funnel tips, available at your local garden center.

Water the plants completely, then fill the plastic bottles. Screw on the watering cap or spike and push the bottles back into the ground next to your plants.

You may need several bottles to water your entire garden, but this system is a simple way to ensure your plants get enough water to drink. The slowly dripping water will keep the soil moist until the buckets are empty.

If your vacation is going to be longer than a few weeks, you can try using a 2 liter bottle. Just make sure they’re stable and don’t tip over.
