Attract beautiful hummingbirds to your yard or garden in this easy wayHomemade Hummingbird Foodcooking recipe !

Attract beautiful hummingbirds to your backyard or garden with this simple homemade hummingbird food recipe!

Homemade Hummingbird Food Recipe

I have already written about my adoration for the strange hummingbird creatures. Last month I explained how to attract them to your own backyard bythis blog post! They fascinate me and bring so much joy and surprise to outdoor spaces. I grew up watching their little bodies hover outside the window of my grandmother’s house, and since then have always enjoyed them when they appeared in my garden to feed on flowers or my hummingbird feeder. .

Why make your own hummingbird food?

My children are also always interested in observing these boys. It’s so much fun for the whole family! That’s why I want to share the best and simple homemade hummingbird food with you all today. It’s two components and it couldn’t be easier (or faster) to make, and this season is sure to bring beautiful birds to your garden.

I would immediately advise bats not to use red dye, which some sources claim is mixed with food. Hummingbirds love bright red because it is reminiscent of soft flowers, but simply using a red feeder has the same effect, as the dye can be harmful to hummingbird health. With that, let’s get to the recipe!

I like to make a batch of my favorite cakesgranola bar recipe(or onesmoothie recipe), grab a snack outside and spend some time enjoying nature and these amusing little creatures. Seriously, they’re fun and good for the soul.

Attract beautiful hummingbirds to your backyard or garden with this simple homemade hummingbird food recipe!

Hummingbird Food Ingredients

Homemade hummingbird food only requires two simple ingredients that I guarantee you will have at home. To make this hummingbird treat, you will need:

  • Hot water
  • Granulated sugar

That’s it!

How to make hummingbird food

To make hummingbird food, simply boil water, remove from heat, add sugar, and stir until the sugar dissolves. Let the mixture cool completely, then pour it into your hummingbird food tray.

Start monitoring your feeder because once these beautiful birds realize that there is sugar water to drink, they will start visiting your feeder as often as possible.

Can I use tap water?

You can! Do not forget to bring to a boil before use so that the sugar dissolves completely and boiling removes all impurities.

What type of sugar should I use?

You will want to use white granulated sugar – or regular table sugar. Do not use raw or unprocessed sugar, honey, or corn syrup, as these can be harmful to the hummingbird’s health.

Should I boil the water?

Boiling the water is recommended to help remove any impurities that may be present in the water.

How long can I store sugar water in the refrigerator?

Store leftover sugar water in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. If you notice mold growing in the mix, throw it out and make a new batch.

How often should I change the food in my hummingbird tray?

It’s best to change and empty the feed tray every other day, but if you miss a day or two, just be sure to transfer feed and clean at least twice a week in the warmer months and once a week during the colder months. This helps prevent mold growth.

When Should I Ditch My Hummingbird Feeder?

Hummingbirds migrate seasonally, so when you place your hummingbird feeder depends on where you live. For those who live in the southern regions of the United States, you can set up a feed from February to November. In the central part of the country, it is planned to place feeders from April to October, while in the northern states of the United States, place hummingbird feeders from early May to September.

Where should I install my hummingbird feeder?

Place your hummingbird feeder in less active areas (away from where pets or children often play as hummingbirds can be shy and lose their territory!). Close to trees is best as they like to perch on branches to be wary of predators.

Why shouldn’t I add red coloring to my hummingbird’s food?

First of all, the red dye is not necessary as many feeders themselves are also red – additionally, the dye is harmful to hummingbird health, so be sure to ignore it.

What Plants Attract Hummingbirds?

Hummingbirds like flowers that are brightly colored and secrete lots of nectar, including alfalfa, honeysuckle, and bleeding hearts. They also like red tubular flowers.

Attract beautiful hummingbirds to your backyard or garden with this simple homemade hummingbird food recipe!

Homemade hummingbird food is inexpensive and a healthier alternative to store-bought food. Store-bought foods tend to contain harmful chemicals and preservatives that are unhealthy for hummingbirds.

How to clean a hummingbird feeder:

It’s important to clean your feeder regularly to prevent mold growth and protect delicate hummingbirds. Every day is recommended. Rinse the bird feeder with very hot water. It is not recommended to use soap as the residue can alter the taste of the nectar.

You should also clean your hummingbird tank about once a month. You can soak your feeder in vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to disinfect it. Mix 1 volume of vinegar and 2 volumes of water. Completely remove the feeder and let it soak in the bucket for 1-2 hours.

Where is the best place to hang a hummingbird feeder?

Hummingbird feeders should be placed in full sun. If your feeder is in the sun all day, it will spoil faster. You want to place the feeder where you can see it, but also somewhere the hummingbird is comfortable. They don’t like to be outdoors, so partial shade from a tree or bush, or hanging from the canopy of a tree or your house is a good location.

What time of day do hummingbirds come to feed?

Hummingbirds can often be seen feeding on nectar at dawn or dusk.
