Plants rabbits like to eat

You might be wondering what your rabbit’s favorite plants are. They love fresh vegetables from your garden. Rabbits will always nibble on these:

  • salad
  • Cucumber
  • carrot
  • peas
  • radish
  • Chile
  • Swiss chard
  • bean
  • and more

Rabbits don’t just love your vegetable garden: they love your many beautiful flowers! Here are a few :

  • priest
  • baby flower
  • Dry lotus flower
  • petunias
  • sunflower
  • zinnias
  • hostas
  • phlox
  • tulips
  • etc. the list is very long

If you grow any of these flowers and vegetables, you will need to findHow to keep rabbits out of your garden. I asked my Facebook followers what they do to keep rabbits away from vegetables and I got loads of ideas. I’ll share them below, but first, let’s see which plants rabbits hate.

Plants Rabbits Hate

If you grow flowers and vegetables that rabbits love, you’ll have a hard time keeping them out of your garden. However, you can grow plants that rabbits won’t eat: herbs and flowers that give off a strong smell and are generally avoided by rabbits. Here are some strong-smelling plants:

  • Worry
  • lavender
  • sage
  • columbine
  • delphiniums
  • lemon balm
  • land of perilla
  • catnip
  • periwinkle
  • yarrow

There are plenty of other plants that rabbits won’t eat, but here are a few you can plant right away while you research what else to grow.

So… how do you keep rabbits out of your garden?

Although controlling pests in your garden is never fun, I hope you only use humane means to keep them away from your garden.

I have heard of people using mothballs to keep rabbits away from the garden and I disagree with this method. It is not only toxic to rabbits but also harmful to humans. Please do not use mothballs in the garden!

Look no further, see what you CAN do to keep rabbits from destroying your favorite flowers and vegetables.

1. Use an electronic rabbit repellent

The powerful Hoont solar battery provides ultrasonic power to outdoor animals and pestsThis is my favorite method of keeping rabbits out of my garden.

It’s a cheap and effective way to keep rabbits away and it doesn’t harm anything in my garden: just keep the critters away (not just rabbits but also squirrels, skunks, rats, bears, bamboos, mice, etc.).

There are many models on the market today, butI love this solar powered outdoor supersonic animal- it’s motion-activated and makes it virtually hands-free (I like to move it around the yard every now and then to make sure I cover all areas).

If you’re battling unwanted critters in your yard and around the house, you have to give it a try.

2. Rabbit proof garden fence installation

Perhaps one of the most effective ways to keep rabbits out of your vegetable patch is to build a rabbit-proof fence around the garden. It doesn’t have to be too high unless you wantprotect your garden from deeralso. To protect you from cottontail rabbits, your fence should be 2 feet high and 3 feet high to protect you from jackrabbit dogs.

Use wire if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, but stiff fabric is probably best in the long run: just make sure you bury the bottom of the fence in the ground so the rabbits can’t get through below.

If you want to use an electric fence, place the wire 3 inches and 10 inches from the ground. If you need an economical option, electric fences are less expensive than fabric material.

A similar idea isuse an embossed blanketat night (this is when rabbits like to walk in the garden).

3. Use rabbit repellent plants in your garden

marigold flowers in the garden

Rabbits prefer young, fresh and delicate vegetables, but they are not very interested in strongly fragrant herbs and flowers.

Plants That Repel Rabbits

Here are some plants that repel rabbits. Plant a few around the garden to keep rabbits away.

  • marigolds – planting around your garden creates a barrier for rabbits (they hate the smell of marigolds)
  • spicy basil
  • – keep the rabbits away and make lots of pesto during the summer
  • Christmas basil works well too
  • onion
  • leek
  • lavender
  • mint
  • Oregano

4. Outdoor Pets Can Keep Rabbits Away

outside dog

Our beloved pets are very useful for keeping rabbits in the garden. Not only will they chase away rabbits, but the smell of dog or cat hair and urine will be enough to keep them away.

5. Eliminate optimal conditions for rabbits

Rabbits will only stay where they can hide from predators, such as dense vegetation, piled up yard waste, and disorganized tools and containers strewn across your garden floor.

Keep your garden organized and free of garden debris. Combs, leaves, pebbles, dry plants, buckets, etc. so rabbits can hide easily. Also get rid of tall grass and low bushes.

6. Keep Them Away With These Safe Rabbit Repellents

Creepy owl bait with spooky lights and spooky sounds – solar poweredThere are chemical repellents on the market that can be very effective, but personally I prefer natural repellents that do not harm nature.

  • There is a product called Gotta Garden that repels rabbits – the smell keeps rabbits away and also works against other critters.
  • You can also add used coffee grounds, eggshells, and banana peels to your garden and it seems to work for some people.
  • Using ground black pepper can work and also keeps ants away.
  • Make your own insect repellent from water and Tabasco and spray it on your plants: they will drink a little, but stop when they taste the spice. If you are growing hot peppers, you can use one instead of Tabasco sauce. You can also use chili powder with similar results. Of course, you have to spray again after heavy rains.
  • Use a natural deterrent against rabbits and small creatures,
  • as PLANTSKYD
  • (he saved a friend’s roses and tulips last spring).
  • Irish Spring Bars: Cut the bars into 4-6 pieces, wrap them around a string and hang them from your garden fence low enough to be at rabbit level. You can also hang them on skewers near the vegetables. Or, dump leftover soap into old socks and place them in the garden.
  • Try owl bait
  • : The rabbit is afraid of owls.

7. Hunt Rabbits

pinwheel in the garden

Use an old hose around the garden: it works surprisingly well. The rabbits thought it was a snake and no one wanted to share space with a snake. Or just buy some rubber snakes (This set includes 7 snakes!) and place them near your favorite plants.

Place pinwheels around your garden: the movement of their rotation and the sound will move the rabbit away from the garden. They will also scare away the birds (it will also save your tomatoes!!!)

8. Catch Rabbits in a Live Trap

It can be hard work for some and fun for others. This is not a one-size-fits-all method, so you will need to repeat it periodically if you want to reduce the number of rabbits when new rabbits move into your yard.

If you decide to use this method, make sure you have somewhere to take your rabbit, but most importantly, make sure it’s legal where you live.

Need a direct humanitarian trap? This one is my favorite.

What bait should you use for your live trap? You have several options:

  • rabbit tablets
  • carrot
  • chopped apple

9. Kiss a bunny

For some of us, rabbits bring smiles and we just want to coexist. Rabbits are also hungry, so we can leave food for them.

Grow what rabbits want. Do it away from your garden, and you can keep your garden safe and also take advantage of small hoppers in your yard.

We replaced our garden lawn with clover, and the rabbits continued to congregate there, instead of attacking our flower beds and vegetable patches. As a bonus, our yard comes alive with bees and butterflies!

DYI Rabbit Repellent

You can make your own rabbit repellent from ingredients you’re sure to find around your home: add the following ingredients to a liter of water, shake well, and leave in the sun for about 2 days.

  • Cayenne pepper
  • garlic powder (or you can use fresh if you like)
  • dishwasher soap

After 2 days, strain the liquid, put it in a spray bottle and spray around the plants you want to protect from rabbits.

If you want more options, watch this video for more ideas:

I hope you find something here that will work for you in your fight to keep rabbits away from the garden. If you use different methods, share them in the comments: it can save someone’s vegetable garden or flower bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Marigolds Keep Rabbits Away?

The theory is that rabbits find the smell of marigolds too unpleasant and will stay away from them. However, this has not yet been proven as a solution against deception. If you want to try it,plant marigoldsaround your perimeter fence or near any point in your yard where you have had rabbit problems in the past.

Many people say they have successfully kept rabbits away by planting marigolds in the garden, while others say rabbits love to nibble on marigolds. Worth a try: even if the experiment fails to keep rabbits away from your garden, at least you will have pretty flowers

Do coffee grounds repel rabbits?

Rabbits find the smell of coffee unpleasant, so it may prevent them from entering your garden for food or shelter. And since coffee grounds are natural and unsourced, apply coffee grounds to the soil around the plants you want to protect. Who knows? You may be able to keep your rabbit out of the garden.

Will vinegar keep rabbits away?

Vinegar has proven to be an effective deterrent for rabbits as they don’t like the smell. This makes them uncomfortable, so it’s best to spray vinegar near areas where they dig or chew threads (be careful.Notto spray the plants you want to keep alive). You can also try placing a cotton ball or cotton cloth soaked in vinegar and placing it in a plastic container with a few small holes to let the smell out.

Learning how to keep rabbits out of the garden can be difficult because a solution that works for others may not work for you. Keep trying and I hope you find the right method for YOUR garden!
