Multi-read content how to tell what size ac unit i have

Do you know the size of your air conditioner? In the world of building science, you will often hear whyOversized air conditioners are a bad idea. Why? In short, they may not absorb moisture well, a short bike ride will drain them faster, and your home may be less comfortable if the air conditioner is too loud. But to know if your AC is oversized, you first need to know what size it is. (Note: This article is about finding the size of your current AC, not specifying the size you need.)

Find the label

The good news is that most HVAC manufacturers make it easy to determine the rated capacity of your air conditioner. It’s in the model number. Go outside and find the outdoor unit, the metallic noise generator hidden in the side or back of the house. It should look like the one you see above, but maybe not as rotten as this one. Then find the table that provides data on your AC. It will look like the image below.

air conditioner size outdoor unit model number tons nameplate label

Near the top of the label you will see the model number (M/N) and serial number (S/N). The model number is where you can find the number you are looking for. Not all manufacturers do this, but most will give you a 2 or 3 digit part that tells you how many thousands of BTUs your air conditioner can pull away from your home/hour.

The first section of the model number gives you information about the type and performance of the device you are considering. In the case of this model from Lennox (which, by the way, isNotof the outdoor unit pictured at the top of this article), the 13HPX tells you that it is a heat pump with a 13 SEER efficiency rating.

The numbers you need

However, just pass this 5-character string which is the part that tells you the rated size: 048. This means that the air conditioner — or heat pump in cooling mode in this case — is rated at 48,000 BTU/hour . I say nominally becauseActual capacity will almost certainly be different.

The numbers you will see on residential air conditioners and heat pumps are:

The 3 digit model number tells you the rated capacity in thousands of BTUs/hour. Since every 12,000 BTU/hour equals 1 ton of air conditioner capacity, it’s easy to figure out how many tons of rated capacity your air conditioner has.

Pretty simple isn’t it?

The size of your residential air conditioner unit is not obvious. To figure out the size of your current air conditioner, or to figure out what size air conditioner will replace your existing a/c unit, you need to crack the code.

On the outside condenser, there is a tag with the model number. That single model number contains much information about that unit including the size of the air conditioner in BTU’s or British Thermal Units. When you divide the BTU’s by 12,000, you arrive at the tons of cooling capacity for a particular air conditioner. or the The model number on the air conditioning unit holds a two digit even number which when divided by 12 will yield the tonnage or ac capacity in tons of cooling.

It’s important to know this number before getting quotes for repairs or a replacement.

Description:

How to Calculate the BTUs for Your Room When it comes to room air conditioners, it’s important to have the proper sized unit. If you have an air conditioner that’s too large for the room, it’s going to shut off early and not have enough time to dehumidify and remove the moisture necessary. This will leave you with a very cold and clammy environment. On the other hand, if the air conditioner is too small for the environment that you’re cooling, then the air conditioner will continually run and never cool or dehumidify the room properly, therefore costing you more in energy.

So how do you find the right BTU size air conditioner for your room? It’s quite simple; you simply measure the square footage of the room. This is the length multiplied by the width of the room. If it’s on the main floor, multiply the square footage by 30. If it’s a second floor or kitchen area, multiply the square footage of the room by 40. If your ceiling height is over 8 feet, add 1,000 BTUs for every foot over that 8 foot ceiling height. Also take into consideration the number of people in the room. For each person over the first two individuals, add an additional 600 BTUs to your formula.

Example: You’re looking for an air conditioner for a 10×15 room on the second floor with a 9 foot ceiling. A 10×15 room equals 150 square feet. Since it’s on the second floor, multiply 150 by 40 to give us 6,000 BTUs. We mentioned that the ceiling height was 9 feet, so we want to add an additional 1,000 BTUs. You will need a 7,000 BTU air conditioner to properly cool this space.

A friendly and knowledgeable P.C. Richard \u0026 Son sales associate would be more than happy to help you calculate the amount of BTUs you’ll need for your space and find an air conditioner that will suit your needs. Click, call, or stop by today!
