Silver crockery, tea sets and utensils – often made of copper, brass or nickel and coated with a thin layer of pure silver or silver alloy by electrolysis – add a touch of class to n any table (much more reasonably priced than solid silver). However, silver plate can lose its luster with regular use, accumulate dirt and tarnish, a dirty film forms when sulfur stains in the air react chemically with the silver surface to form sulfide silver.

Because the silver plate’s silver coating is so delicate, it only requires gentle cleaning (unlike its tough cousin, which can actually withstand light abrasion liketoothpaste). Read on to learn how to easily and safely clean silver discs after daily use and a period of tarnishing, so you can enjoy them every day—Notonly when the company arrives.

Daily cleaning

Use this process to clean silver discs to remove dirt that accumulates from frequent use.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
-Acid-free liquid dish soap
-Pair of rubber gloves
-Sponge
-Microfiber blood clot
-sink stopper

STEP 1

Determine if your silverware is lacquered (sealed with a clear protective coating) or unlacquered by pressing the tip of your fingernail in a prominent place. If it leaves a small stain, it has been lacquered; If there is no mark, it is not lacquered.

2ND STEP

Insert the sink stopper into the drain pipe of an empty sink. If you’re cleaning lacquered silverware, run warm tap water until the sink is 3/4 full. (Hot water can strip lacquer.) If you’re cleaning an item without lacquer, run hot tap water.

STEP 3

Add half a teaspoon of acid-free water to the waterliquid dish soap(check the ingredient list, avoid soaps containing “citric extract” or citric acid, a common ingredient in citrus dish soaps which can have a mild corrosive effect on silverware). Use gloved hands to stir until the soap is completely dissolved.

STEP 4

Dip the silverware completely into the soapy basin. Give the pad a soaking time of 3-5 minutes to remove the dirt, then remove it and place it on a clean surface.

STEP 5

While the item is still damp, gently rub the entire surface with a soft, dry cloth or dish sponge to remove stubborn dirt. Avoid using steel wool, polishing cloths or other abrasive materials, which one can scratch?silver disc.

STEP 6

Rinse the item under warm running water to remove any remaining debris, then wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Now don’t forget to polish to fully restore the shine of the metal! Skip to the last section to read how to brighten up your silver plate.

Deep cleaning

Use this technique to clean silver discs at least once a year or whenever you notice a dark, dull film.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
– Aluminum foil
– a 2 liter saucepan
– Baking soda
– Language
– Mirror fabric

STEP 1

Line the bottom and sides of a large glass bowl with a platealuminum foil(may be shiny or dull towards the top), then place the silverware inside the bowl directly on the foil.

2ND STEP

Bring four cups of water to a boil in a saucepan, then transfer the saucepan from the hot spot to an empty tub. Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to the pot while the water inside is still hot. The water will bubble as the baking soda dissolves.

STEP 3

If you are cleaning unglazed silverware, immediately pour all the hot water and baking soda over the silverware in a foil-lined glass bowl. If the item is lacquered, wait until the warm water is reached before pouring it on the silver item (hot water can strip the lacquer). The baking soda will immediately trigger a chemical reaction with the silver sulfide. You should begin to see the black film fade within a minute and, depending on the degree of dullness, disappear completely within 5-10 minutes.

STEP 4

Use tongs to remove the silver metal from the bowl, then rinse with warm water to remove the film on the bowl. Wipe the item with a soft, dry cloth and polish according to the following section before storing.

Polished silver plate

Follow this routine or deep clean, use it to restore shine to silver discs.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS Available on Amazon
-Pair of rubber gloves
– Polished silver (paste or cream)
– Microfiber cloth
– Anti-tarnish silver storage bag
– Anti-tarnish fabric lining

STEP 1

After donning gloves, squeeze a dot of silver polish onto a soft, clean, dry cloth. Gently rub in a polishing powder or cream (e.g. Wright’s Silver Polish Cleaner, available for $5 onAmazon) over the entire surface of the clean silver object in a circular motion.

2ND STEP

Rinse the item under warm running water to remove excess polish, then immediately dry the item with a soft, clean cloth. Air drying can lead to unsightly water spots.

STEP 3

Store your cleaned and polished silverware in a tarnish-resistant silver storage bag (see example on Amazon) or kitchen drawer covered with anti-tarnish fabric (see example on Amazon). These fabrics absorb sulfur from the air, preventing the chemical reaction that causes tarnishing.

MATERIALS

Baking soda

Salt

Aluminum foil

Tongs

Optional: toothbrush

Measure out 1-2 gallons of water in a large pot (I often use 2 gallons to fill up the large side of my sink)

Heat the water to boiling

Place a stopper in the sink, and then lay down one sheet of aluminum foil

For every gallon of water, add 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of salt to the sink

Once the water is boiling, pour it into the sink (note: the mixture will react and begin to bubble)

Use the tongs to stir and dissolve the baking soda and salt into the water

Use the tongs to add silver to the water

Note: the silver item needs to touch the aluminum foil to allow transfer of the tarnish

Let the silver item sit for 1-2 minutes, turning with tongs if needed

BE CAREFUL – the water is super hot

Remove item for the water using tongs

Repeat this process for as many items as needed

It there is still stuck on tarnish, you can create a paste of baking soda and water and gently scrub with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush

To add a little shine to the pieces, spray with Windex or a mixture of vinegar and water and buff with a soft cloth

Rinse the silver pieces and dry with a cloth
