Multi-read content how to add color to a wall without painting

White walls: existential disadvantage of many tenants. And while painting is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to instantly change the look of any space, for many tenants it’s often limitless. Whether you’re not allowed to paint the walls or don’t want to have to repaint before you move in, don’t consider yourself stuck with a bland space. Instead, try one of these totally temporary ways to add color and pattern to your walls without a brush!
1. Peel and stick wallpaper

Once unobtainable, temporary stick-on wallpaper is now available at specialty stores online (Spoonflower is a favorite) as well as places like Target and HomeGoods. Like wallpapers, these peel and stick versions can do a lot for you, and with the multitude of options available, you’re sure to find something to match your style. Keep in mind that these types of papers can be expensive to install throughout an entire room. Consider using just one or two rolls for a prominent wall or accent in the room (as pictured above).
2. Traditional wallpapers

Don’t overlook plain wallpaper on your wall just because you’re a tenant; just be sure to hang it in a tenant friendly way! Traditional wallpaper can sometimes be cheaper than decals and stickers and easier to find. To hang it in a removable way, be sure to buy non-stick wallpaper and hang it with liquid starch. (Usethis step by step guideto help you!). Always test a decal on your wall to make sure it’s removed cleanly before you do all of your space!
3. Wrapping paper

If you’re craving wallpaper but can’t afford the expense or the work, use wrapping paper instead! Wrapping paper is the cheapest option for covering your walls, and since rolls are typically 30 inches wide, you can often finish an entire wall for less than $10! It is also very easy to hang: staples, double tape and a stapler work perfectly! However, it is important to note that wrapping paper is the thinnest and most delicate paper option for your walls. Also, when using temporary hanging methods like clips or tape, it won’t stick to your wall as tightly as peel and stick or traditional wallpapers. Therefore, it is best to wrap the paper on the wall in low traffic areas or behind a closet.

4. Paper scrapbook

When it comes to your walls, think beyond scrolls! With a little creativity, brightly colored paper from the craft store is all you need to give your space a pop of color. Use masking tape and 12″ x 12″ sheets of cardboard to create fun and interesting designs. Folded or flat, from stripes to random patterns, the possibilities are endless. Want to try this eye-catching paper feature? View Instructionsthis!
5. Fabric

Finally, fabric is another great way to get color and pattern on your walls without the need for paint or the cost and labor of wallpaper. Fabric can be expensive, so keep an eye out for clearance and sale pins. Plus, it’s available in widths from 44″ to 60″, so choose the width that best suits your space.
There are many ways to hang fabric on your wall. If holes in the wall are not a problem, a stapler is the quickest and easiest method (used on the dotted wall above).

Liquid starch is another great method for hanging fabric on the wall. This method achieves a true wallpaper-like finish, but without holes or damage in the wall. Need step by step? Usethis guide!

Finally, the fabric does not need to be attached directly to the wall to make an impact in a space. If your bland room needs a pop of color, consider wrapping fabric around wooden frames or insulated panels. Both are light enough to hang on the wall and can be quickly and easily lowered when it’s time to move!
If you’re tired of bland, boring walls in your rental but can’t paint, don’t despair! There are so many great products you can use to paint colors and patterns on your walls. From peel and stick wallpaper to regular kraft paper, the possibilities are endless! If you are looking for even more ideas for your space, don’t miss itthe power of artand trythese creative waysto add color elsewhere than on the wall!
