Finding perennials in your garden can be difficult. Want to try growing a Schefflera but not sure if it will live more than a few years? Well, we’ve done some research and have the answer for you. Get your hands on it right away.

Schefflera trees will typically live 20 to 25 years if the conditions are right. Climate and general upkeep will play a big part in a Schefflera’s lifespan, so be sure to plant it in a well-lit location and remember to fertilize it regularly.

In the beginning, we will cover all things Schefflera and discuss the lifespan of an individual. Whether you have a tree currently growing in your garden or want to plant a few, we’re here to help. That said, let’s dive into this article!

Gorgeous and healthy Schefflera plants photographed on the garden, How Long Do Schefflera Plants Live?

Does Schefflera have a long shelf life?

Schefflera don’t live very long, but they can last you around 25 years. Although each tree ages differently, you can generally expect a Schefflera tree to live healthy for about two decades.

In addition to being relatively easy to care for, the Schefflera is low maintenance and performs well both indoors and outdoors. That said, Schefflera does not tolerate cold well, so try to keep your strain somewhere with mild weather all year round.

Where can I grow Schefflera?

Ideally, you want to grow Schefflera plants in USDA zones10-12. As mentioned, these plants prefer mild weather and don’t do well in colder climates, so try to keep yours where it’s not too cold.

In general, Schefflera does best in temperatures between 65 and 90 degrees, especially in subtropical climates. Plantains are also great houseplants, so if you have colder winters, we recommend moving them indoors until the weather improves.

How fast is Schefflera growing?

Schefflera grows quite quickly, on average aboutthree legsevery year. Especially if you have yours outdoors, you may even see upwards of three feet of annual growth, so make sure your plant is in a bright location.

That said, indoor Schefflera will grow more slowly than their outdoor counterparts, often averaging almost two feet per year. Each plant is different, but we recommend keeping them outdoors if you want to see your Schefflera grow quickly.

How do Schefflera plants become?

In general, you can expect an outdoor Schefflera to reach a height of 30 to 40 feet in ideal conditions. The indoor Schefflera will be smaller, usually closer to 8 or 10 feet, so location makes a difference.

If you have a dwarf Schefflera, your plant will only reach about 4 feet at full maturity, making it perfect for indoor gardening.

How much sun does Schefflera need?

An up close photo of Schefflera leaves at day

Schefflera ismedium lightplants, which means they prefer bright light to direct sunlight. In particular, the Schefflera should avoid full sun during peak hours, although if you live where it’s not too hot your plants should be fine.

In general, the Schefflera is best left in direct sunlight for a few off-peak hours in the morning, then in indirect light in the afternoon.

Can Schefflera tolerate low light?

Although Schefflera tolerates low light, don’t expect your plant to grow very well. Schefflera will have a long-legged appearance if they don’t get enough nutrients from the sun and may even become completely stunted, which is why we don’t recommend growing them in such low-light conditions.

Especially for those who want to keep the Schefflera indoors, you should make sure it is near a bright window to avoid stunting your plants.

Can Schefflera live outside in winter?

As long as you have mild winters, you can probably grow Schefflera outdoors safely. As mentioned, this plant can live outdoors in USDA zones 10-12 year-round, including through winter.

That said, if the forecast calls for temperatures below 35 degrees, you may want to cover your tree until it warms up a bit. Considering that the Schefflera is a tropical species, the less winter the better.

Will Schefflera return after being frozen?

If the weather drops to freezing temperatures, don’t panic. Fortunately, if your Schefflera is healthy, an occasional cold snap won’t kill it, but it can give it a temporary shock.

Typically, this will result in wilted, slightly discolored leaves, which can be removed after a few days if the plant still looks rough. If possible, try moving your Schefflera indoors in cold weather, or cover it with plastic sheeting or heat wrap for protection.

How often should you water your Schefflera?

An umbrella tree or Schefflera actinophylla photographed up close

You want to water the Schefflera every seven to ten days. Although these plants like to stay in moist soil, overwatering can lead to root rot and even death.

A good way to test Schefflera soil is to smell around its base, and if the soil is too wet, stop watering. Of course, if you live somewhere with drier conditions, you may need to adjust your watering schedule more often, so everyone will be different.

What does a weighted Schefflera look like?

Typically, a Schefflera plant with an overgrowth will have yellow/brown leaves and begin to droop. You may also notice your tree losing leaves if you water it too much, often starting with its new growth.

As we mentioned above, Schefflera can even suffer from root rot due to too much water, which can be deadly.

Why did my Schefflera plant die?

If you notice your Schefflera starting to die off, it could be for several reasons. Some of the more common causes include:

  • Irrigation
  • Underwatering
  • pests
  • Not enough sun

On this list, overwatering and lack of sun are common culprits, so be sure to check your Schefflera’s soil and sun exposure regularly. You should also treat your Schefflera plant for pests/diseases as soon as possible to prevent them from spreading to other plants in your garden.

Can you save a dying Schefflera?

Yes, you can save a dying Schefflera if you act fast. If you have overwatered, allow the plant’s soil to dry out for about a week, then gradually resume your watering schedule.

If your Schefflera is not getting enough sunlight, you may consider moving it to a brighter location or pruning the plants/trees around it. For pests, it’s best to get a professional to assess the situation and treat your Schefflera with the appropriate products to prevent further damage.

How often should you fertilize Schefflera?

A gorgeous and bloomign Schefflera plant photographed up close

In general, it is betterfertilizeSchefflera once or twice a month in spring and summer. Especially for houseplants, you should make sure to fertilize Schefflera regularly between March and August to ensure the plants grow as much as possible before fall and winter.

Although Schefflera will not go into hibernation or lose all of its leaves, your plants will not grow at their normal rate in cooler weather, especially indoors. That said, we recommend using a balanced liquid fertilizer (20-20-20) for your plants to avoid root damage and applying no more than twice a month.

EZ-gro Liquid Fertilizer 20-20-20

This fertilizer has a balanced formula that delivers powerful nutrients directly to your plant’s roots, mixed with water, and comes in a 32 ounce container.

See this fertilizer on Amazon.

Do you need Schefflera pruning?

There is no need to prune the Schefflera tree. You can of course prune your tree if you want to control its size, although we don’t recommend doing this too often.

ArrivalcutSchefflera, you want to cut off the top stem end about an inch. To help improve the width of your Schefflera tree, cut the branches you want shorter just before their leaf nodes to slow the tree’s growth.

To finish

Whether you have a Schefflera tree growing in your garden or want to grow one, knowing how long it will live is essential. A Schefflera typically lives between 20 and 25 years, although it depends on how you take care of it.

When it comes to growing Schefflera plants, you want to plant the plant in a location with lots of indirect sunlight and in a location that has mild winters/weather all year round. It’s also important to water the Schefflera every seven to ten days, but not so much that its soil is soggy.

Either way, be sure to act quickly if your Schefflera starts to die back, and don’t forget to fertilize it once or twice a month in the spring and summer.

11 types of houseplants that are hard to kill

Popular questions about how long do schefflera plants live

how long do schefflera plants live?

Schefflera plants can live for decades in optimal conditions. Grown indoors, these plants can live up to 25 years even.

How big can a schefflera plant get?

There are two species of schefflera plants: Schefflera actinophylla can grow to heights of 8 to 10 feet inside and up to 40 feet outside in very warm climates. Schefflera arboricola, known as the “dwarf umbrella tree,” has smaller leaflets and a shorter mature height of just 3 to 4 feet indoors.

Can you cut back a schefflera plant?

Trimming Schefflera houseplants can be achieved by cutting off the tops of the tallest stalks about an inch (2.5 cm.) above the spot where the next leaf down is attached. This will encourage more growth outward from the stalk instead of upward.

How do you keep a schefflera plant alive?

Water weekly during the growing season and spray the leaves frequently. You can wait until the soil in the pot dries out and then thoroughly soak the soil when you water. Cut back on water during winter. Often, people will overwater a Schefflera plant, and doing so will eventually kill it.

Why is my Schefflera dying?

Watering tends to be the most common problem that leads to the demise of houseplants. You could be watering the schefflera plant a bit too much or even a bit too little. Schefflera plants are the kind that don’t require frequent watering. Generally-speaking, a weekly watering schedule should suffice.

When should I repot my Schefflera?

Schefflera repotting may see it moved to a larger container to grow it bigger or into the same pot with fresh soil and a gentle root trim. Either should be done in spring, according to houseplant experts.

How long does an umbrella plant live?

Schefflera plants will usually live between 20 and 25 years if the conditions are right. Climate and overall upkeep will play a big role in how long Schefflera lives, so make sure to plant yours somewhere that gets plenty of bright light, and don’t forget to fertilize regularly.

Do Schefflera like to be root bound?

These tropical plants will grow prolifically as long as they have ample indirect sunlight and adequate moisture. After several years in the same pot, you must repot schefflera house plants to prevent them from becoming root bound and enable them to continue growing and thriving.

Should I stake my Schefflera?

A mature tree, like the one pictured in the lead image, may need to be supported with a stake. Schefflera that get too big or leggy can be pruned back. Pinch growing tips to encourage a fuller, bushier plant. In warm, high-humidity conditions, outdoor plants may even flower, but don’t expect flowers indoors.

Can you root Schefflera cuttings in water?

Propagating Schefflera in water is simple and can be done over and over again using cuttings. Keeping your cuttings in water, in a shady area, and applying growth hormone promotes quick root growth. You can expect to have roots after six weeks and a full, healthy, new plant in 3-4 months.

Is schefflera an indoor plant?

Native to South Asia and some parts of Australia, schefflera is a tropical plant, which is part of the secret to its success as an indoor plant! Because so many tropical houseplants evolved to thrive beneath a thick tree canopy, they often tolerate indoor light conditions fairly well.

Is a schefflera plant indoor or outdoor?

Schefflera prefers a warm, humid environment similar to its native, tropical habitat. Outdoors, the plant does best when located in partial sun to partial shade. When grown as an indoor plant, schefflera prefers indirect light, without any exposure to direct sun.

Why is my schefflera drooping?

The most common cause of an Umbrella Plant drooping is overwatering, resulting in root rot. Signs of this include yellow lower leaves, poorly draining soil and an offensive smell from the soil. Other causes of drooping include cold stress, transplant shock, underwatering, or overfertilizing.

Why are my Schefflera leaves turning brown and falling off?

Incredibly dry soil

That said, periods of prolonged drought can cause foliage to brown and dry. Be sure you’re not over or underwatering your plant. If you accidentally let your Schefflera’s soil dry out completely, you may see leaves go limp, droop, and possibly start to brown and curl.

How do you know when your umbrella plant is dying?

Things probably went fine for a good amount of time, but you’ll be worried if it seems as if your plant isn’t doing so well any longer. If your umbrella plant is discolored, drooping, or losing its leaves, then you’re probably concerned that it’s dying.
