I have a large induction motor rated at about 19 amps at 110 and about 9.5 at 220. My 15 amp table saw motor also tends to trip the breaker the first time it starts depending on what others operate on the same circuit. The best solution, if possible, is to simply switch everything to 220V power and add a 220 socket if there isn’t one already.

At 220 volts (also called 230 or 240), the amperage of a given appliance is halved. This means you can use finer gauge wire safely and affordably. The increased amperage also helps the induction motor spin faster. Some power-hungry machines, such as large circular saws and large welders, can only run on 220. This makes them readily available at any store. Contrary to popular belief, going from 110 to 220 does not increase the power available in a conventional engine.

Several items are needed to install a new 220 outlet, all of which are available at Home Depot or any similar store. My store goes to my basement store, where the junction boxes and electrical outlets are already screwed directly into the cinder block. In other words, it’s not framed. As a result, I only need onesocket box, as shown in the picture, plus a 220 socket cover and some1-1/4 Tapcon. Concrete screw.

I also had to run conduit between the outlet box and the ceiling. This tool is extremely inexpensive at any home store. You can also use galvanized boxes and conduit, but plastic seems easier to work with and less likely to conduct electricity.

You also need a220 outputsand220 circuit breakers. They must be sized for the required load. In my case, I know my load will be 7-10 amps. Small breakers like this for 220 aren’t very common, so I went ahead and sized them up to 20 amps. There is a slight danger of going too big, that the circuit breaker won’t operate when it should, but this oversized amount shouldn’t cause any problems.

220 socket styles are available, but the bonded 6-20R is a very popular socket style for woodworking equipment. It doesn’t matter which one you use as long as you’re consistent, unless your device also requires 110V power. (This is more common with kitchen appliances than with tools.) It’s also important to note that different outlets are rated for different maximum wattages. Make sure you have a big enough one. There are also many types of breakers, so I have to make sure to match the model already in the breaker box.

Note that I am not getting a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. For the 110 circuit, I would absolutely do that, but the same concept doesn’t apply to the 220 circuit. The details are beyond the scope of this article.

The last thing I need is wire. This must also be sized appropriately for the circuit breaker and outlet. For 20 amps,12 gauge wireis appropriate.

I’ll just add a note here on Romex wiring. Like I said, I chose 12 gauge to match my 20 amp circuit. For 30 amps I would upgrade to 10 gauge wire. For the 110 shop just buyStandard 12-2 Romex, with hot wire (black), neutral wire (white) and earth wire (unshielded). For 220 you have two hoes and a floor. You can do itwire 12-3, which is a little more expensive, but has two hotspots (one black, one red), one ground (no coverage), and one neutral (white). You need 12-3 for the aforementioned case when you have an appliance that requires both 220 and 110 volts. For tools, as I said, this generally does not apply.

I picked cheap and got 12-2. It’s about 2/3 the price. In my area it is completely findable and up to date codeas long as you mark the white wire with red. You can do this with liquid tape, red electrical tape or my choice,red heat shrink. The point here is that the electrician will treat the white wire as neutral and therefore safe. If you use 220 and use that white wire as the hot wire instead, you need to mark it red so the next person doesn’t make a stupid mistake.

The first step in the process is to install the socket housing to hold the socket. When using Tapcon concrete anchors, it is best to drive as many screws into the mortar as possible, as this provides a better hold. Tapcon includes a pilot hole drill sized to fit their largest screw sets.

Once the pilot hole is drilled, the PVC box can be mounted using a screw position at this location. 3 more pilot holes can now be drilled through the box to ensure they are in place. Finally, the 4 screws can be inserted.

The next step is to attach a plug to the box. To start, I stripped the end of the wire I purchased and added a red heatsink bead to the white wire to make it clear to the next person that it was a hot wire, not a a neutral wire. If you read the next step, I wish I had waited to do this.

I will describe what I should have done, rather than done. The simplest approach is to cut the conduit to the correct size. You can use ametal saw,Butcher, Wheremulti-tool oscilloscopeanother for this purpose. Pull the unstripped wire through the cut conduit, then through the top of the box. Let the conduit hang.Now, take the strip of wire, apply red heat shrink tubing and then wrap both ends to secure them to the box. Trying to push bare wire through conduit is pretty annoying.

For a standard 100V outlet, you must ensure that hot and neutral are not mixed. In this case, I have two choices, so it doesn’t matter which is which. The important thing is that the bare ground is attached to the green screw, and the two spikes are attached to the other two.

Then I was able to pull out the wiring until only a few inches remained. (I pulled it further in the picture.) At this point, I just pushed the plug into the box and screwed it in.

I finally put the lid on, completing the installation of the box. It should now be firmly in place.

The next step is to attach the conduit to the wall. I have about 3 feet of conduit so I just need a few anchors. They mount in the same way as an outlet box. I simply drowned them with some Tapcons.

At this point, the outlet box is complete and completely attached to the wall. Now I just run the wire along the ceiling struts to the panel.

Since my store in the basement was not yet built or finished, installing the wiring was easy. I simply followed what the original builders did and used large pins to secure the wire along the brace. To pass through the people jostling towards the wall, I drilled a hole as shown in the photo. When I reached the back wall, I again followed the pin method to access the circuit breaker box. I don’t have a good picture of the stapler, but the wire hanging in the picture was stretched near the ceiling.

For a finished basement, this will require significantly fewer pins, but more fishing line withfishing rod,fish band, or something similar. Honestly, I hate doing this kind of work and would probably hire someone.

It should be noted that other stores can also be added. I actually just did, adding this second outlet on the way to the circuit breaker. The basic procedure is the same, except the two outlets attach to the top right junction box. Electrical codes in most areas do not allow wiring nuts to be connected outdoors, for obvious reasons. They must be in a junction box.

I can take an oversized socket box and fit more connections into it. Instead I just put in a second junction box. The wires from both outlets, as well as the circuit breaker box, go to this junction box. All are connected to each other by nuts and are securely enclosed inside to avoid the risk of fire and explosion.

Up to this point, everything is fundamentally safe. I’m dealing with exposed walls, so I’m not likely to have to drill any hidden wires. Nothing is connected to electricity yet. This is where things get dangerous, again,Don’t follow what I do blindly without consulting an expert. You could be injured by opening your circuit breaker. It may also be illegal depending on your region.

Now that I have wires for all the paths to the box, it’s time to set up the circuit. My store had its own subpanel, so that’s where my circuit went. It’s important to make sure not to overload the board, but in my case I have very few circuits anyway. I turned off the main power to this panel, as well as the main breaker. I want to make sure the panel is completely cold, then treat it as if it’s still alive.

Once everything was off, I removed the six screws holding the top cover. Here you can see that the panel is exposed. For those who haven’t started, what we have is a large mains hotline running down the middle through a 100 amp main fuse, which of course is off. Individual circuit breakers are plugged in, and each circuit’s hot lead connects to its circuit breaker’s screw. Just to the left and right of the circuit breaker are the terminal blocks for the neutral wire. These won’t carry electricity unless someone wires the wrong thing to the box. (It happens!) Finally, on the right, all the ground wires connect to a terminal block. It should never be live, and if there is a ground fault it can be very dangerous.

Inside the box I stripped the wires down to where it connects to the circuit breaker. I also put the heat shrink on the white wire, to make sure anyone checking the box knows it’s the hot wire.

Then I plugged in the newly purchased circuit breaker. It depends a bit on what type of circuit breaker you have, but they usually lock on one side then pop in on the other. The 220V breakers have two screw connections, instead of the typical connection on 110V breakers. I connected the black heatsink to one heatsink and the red heatsink to the other.

Before I could put the panel cover back on, I had to remove two of the spaces for my new circuit breaker. I just screwed them in with a pair of pliers.

Once that was done, with the breaker still off, I put the panel cover back on and labeled the circuit in the list on the door. Finally, I held my breath and turned the circuit breaker back on. Just kidding, I know it will work.

As a final step before plugging the machine in, I used a voltmeter set to high voltage AC to confirm everything was stable. As you can see, with both wires connected to my two hot wires, I have 252 volts. The intended range is 220 to 240 volts. So what’s going on, did I do something wrong??

Actually no. Unexpected high voltage could indicate there is a problem with your wiring, but after panicking I went home to the voltmeter and noticed the voltage was still higheverywhere. 110 stores is about 132, and 220 stores, including my dryer and stove, are also around 250. That tells me the real problem might be the transformer down the street. .

Sure enough, before I had a chance to call the electric company, they were actually working on the transformer closest to me. The next day I found that my 110 stores had dropped to around 118, and the 240 stores were all close to 236. That number was still a bit high, but within acceptable limits, so I gave up.
