Chipboard is a great alternative to real wood and is just as capable of looking good. It is more economical than real wood and can be easily found at your local hardware store.

Even so, many people are still hesitant to buy particle board due to its appearance. But the truth is, particleboard can be just as aesthetically pleasing as real wood, especially when it comes to interior design.

What is a particle board?

Chipboard is a material made from wood shavings and turpentine which are then molded into boards and panels. It is denser and more uniform than plywood, and due to its low cost, it is often used to make affordable furniture.

Although it may seem cheap to some, chipboard can easily become more appealing – you just have to know how.

Prepare the beadboard

Before starting the chipboard renovation process, you must first make sure that it is ready. You can do this bysandingParticleboard to remove scratches and ensure it is ready for the first coat of primer.

Be sure to sand the particle board as finely as possible and do this over newspapers or trash bags to catch any debris.

Next you will want to apply a primer to the particleboard. Using a primer will ensure that the paint you use on the particleboard gets a good finish. When choosing a primer, be sure to choose one that is not water-based, as this causes the chipboard to swell.

Ideally, you should use rubber-based or oil-based primers and paints. Once you have applied your first coat of primer, be sure to allow it to dry before painting.second layer.

Once you’ve primed it, you’ll also need to make sure you seal the edges of the particleboard. Otherwise, you can hurt yourself due to their sharpness. You can also use a primer for the edges or you can use drywall compound to glue the edges.

After priming and taking care of the edges, you can also add a coat of enamel to give your particleboard a glossier look. Make sure that between coats of enamel paint, you wipe off the excess on your brush so it doesn’t sit.

If you want to add texture to your glaze, lightly tap the brush on the chipboard to create the effect.

Once you have your chipboard ready, you are ready to start painting.

Draw your chipboard

If you’re looking to make your particleboard look as real as possible, you can create that effect by using a brown glaze to paint what looks like wood grain onto your particleboard. When finished, simply apply an additional coat of clear varnish to complete the design.

If you’re looking to paint your chipboard a different color, you can follow the same instructions we just mentioned, but use a different color paint instead of brown.

Refresh the old beadboard

Many furniture manufacturers use particle board to create their furniture as it is more profitable not only for them but also for their customers. The only problem with this is that chipboard may not last long when used to hold heavy household items like televisions.

However, before considering throwing away your old chipboard furniture, considerRenovatedthis. To do this you will need a few tools including a scraper, sandpaper, paint brush, paint roller, paint tray, wood putty, cement, cloth, primer, paint and a roll cover.

Once you have all of these documents in place, you are ready to begin. The first thing you want to do is make sure you can repair any chips or scratches that may appear on your particle board. If you don’t, it can dramatically affect how you use your particleboard.

To fix this, use the wood filler we mentioned earlier to fill in any cracks that could easily break your particleboard. Simply spread wood filler over the affected areas using a putty knife, making sure to install it as gently as possible.

Remember that once you’ve put the wood filler in, you’ll need to let it dry overnight before you can continue working on it. The next day you can take your sandpaper and file away any parts of the putty that may not have gone smoothly.

Another common problem people encounter when trying to refurbish their particle board is that it has been damaged by water. This usually happens on particleboard that has not been laminated and has been painted.

Unfortunately, water tends to bubble and stain particle board and can eventually break it completely. When this happens, there is not much you can do to save the damaged chipboard. In fact, your best bet is to just cut out the damaged areas and work with what you have left.

If you need to get rid of any water damage on the particleboard, you can always fill it with the wood filler we mentioned earlier, then sand it down to make sure it’s as smooth as possible. Again, sanding the chipboard is extremely important as it helps remove any previous coating and makes repainting much easier.

While sanding, don’t worry about peeling off the wallpaper. The goal is to create enough texture on the material that when you add a new coat of paint, it will adhere easily. As mentioned earlier, you should also spend some time priming the particleboard before painting.

Remember that primer comes in different shades, so be sure to choose one that matches the color you plan to use.

After the primer is applied, you must wait a full 24 hours before you can apply the topcoat. Once the primer has dried, you should use sandpaper to reapply the primer, making sure to smooth out any rough edges.

You are now ready to draw. Add two to three coats of paint over your particleboard, depending on the color you are using.

Various uses of particle board

In addition to its use as decoration or in furniture, chipboard is also used asflooring materials. It is most often used to coat hardwood floors to protect them from scratches. It is also commonly used as a base when laying floors, but before that they must be specially treated so that they are not susceptible to water or termite damage.

Often, chipboard is also used in the walls. They are excellent as a form of insulation and are extremely cost effective which means they are used frequently. Believe it or not, chipboard is also perfect for creating false ceilings. They are great for keeping room temperature intact and are commonly used in auditoriums, cinemas and theaters.

Most often, chipboard is used in doors. This material can easily grip things like hinges and screws and create a flat, smooth surface.

Disadvantages of using particle board

Chipboard is economical and easy to refurbish, but it’s not always ideal to use. For one thing, it’s not ideal for holding heavy items because it doesn’t hold up well. This also means it’s less durable than plywood or real wood, so if you’re looking for a piece of furniture that will last a long time, chipboard furniture won’t be the ideal choice.

Particleboard is also not good for the environment because it contains formaldehyde resin which can be converted into formaldehyde gas, which is not good for humans. Again, using real wood would be ideal as it does not contain any of these added chemicals.

As we mentioned earlier, chipboard is not very resistant to moisture. This means that if you intend to use it for things with a lot of water or humidity, chances are it won’t last very long.

Epilogue

Plywood is hugely popular and has become a cost-effective way for people to design their homes the way they’ve always imagined. The best part is that you can always refurbish the grain of the wood or turn it into anything you want. All you need are some tools and some elbow grease to do it.

The biggest change in updating this cheap furniture was changing the color with spray paint. But before we did that, we added molding on the sides, just like a picture frame, to add a little interest to it. We also added wooden furniture feet to the bottom to add some height and additional visual appeal. While the paint dried, we used Glue Dots Mini Squares to attach a fun fabric to the existing back panel. After reattaching the back panel the bookcase was much more sophisticated, pretty, and decorative!
