Multi-read content how to find sprinkler solenoid

Sometimes it’s a little hard tolocate the sprinkler valve. Although an irrigation system can run smoothly for many years, sprinkler systems require regular maintenance, and often valve boxes are hidden away and hard to find. Identifying a faulty sprinkler valve can be difficult when valve replacement or adjustment is required. Sprinkler valve boxes can be covered with mulch, grass can overgrow, and these valves can even be buried directly in the ground without a valve box.

What is a sprinkler valve?

https://learn.sprinklersupplystore.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/irrigation_valve.png

Automatic irrigation valves are usually spherical or angled (straight or angled) and use a diaphragm and a solenoid to open and close the valve. Sprinkler valves are typically plastic for residential and most commercial applications, then metal for heavy duty sites like golf courses and municipal pump stations. Valves can be grouped together in manifolds or installed individually – and valves should always be buried inside a plastic irrigation valve box. Never bury the valve directly in the ground.

It is recommended that a minimum valve box size of 10 inches circle be used for single valves. Econo valve boxes should not be used for valves as they are too small and difficult to repair. Sprinkler valves are electronically operated using a 24V low voltage main power supply of 18 wires for residential and 14 wires for commercial. The valves require a separate 24v power cord for each valve and are linked together by a white “common” wire, connected between each valve.

The process offind a sprinkler valvecan be complicated; However, these helpful tips can guide you through the localization process.hidden valvein your property.

1) Start where it’s most likely to happen

  • Soil exploration. Identify the irrigation valve area and sift the soil in that particular part of your property. This procedure is not recommended unless you are absolutely certain that a valve box covers the lawn irrigation valves. Otherwise, probing the soil could damage the solenoid, valve wire, or irrigation system piping.
  • Find the valve box cover. If valve boxes are placed above the valves during system installation, they may be just below the surface.

2) Ask the company to install Blueprint

  • Check with the city licensing office. Most of the time, an application for an irrigation system permit involves an irrigation plan, which will indicate the location of the irrigation valve.

3) Click Verify

  • Turn on the area in question. Determine which jets are pressurized first. These are the sprinklers closest to the irrigation system valve.
  • Listen for the clicking sound in the solenoid coil. Open the valve and try to listen for the hum of the solenoid or the sound of water flowing through the valve. Try using a ground mechanic’s stethoscope to monitor.

4) Wire locator

  • Rent a valve locator. These devices detect missing valves by following the wires from the controller to the valve position of the lawn irrigation system. A valve positioner consists of a transmitter, a receiver, two conductors and a ground rod. It transmits a sound signal along the conductor to find the irrigation valve. Using a valve locator is a surefire way to find a missing valve without damaging the lawn.
  • Trace the path of the wire to find the solenoid valve. Use a wire locator also known as a wire tracer. At some tool rental places, especially those that are supplied to professional contractors, they rent cable pullers. This device makes it possible to follow the path of the driver to the valve, starting from the controller/timer.

5) If all else fails, call a professional sprinkler company

  • If these tips don’t work, consider seeking professional help.

Popular questions about how to find sprinkler solenoid

How do I find my sprinkler solenoid valve?

A simple tool known as a chatter locator energizes the valve solenoid, making it possible to locate the valve by listening for the clicking sound it makes. Another rental tool, known as a valve locator, can find a valve by tracing the controller wires using a transmitter, receiver, lead wires, and a grounding stake.

Can’t find my sprinkler valves?

Where is the reticulation solenoid located?

How do you trace a sprinkler wire?

Can you find sprinkler valves with a metal detector?

If your pipes are metal, the metal detector won’t tell you the location of the valve box, but it will tell you where the pipes are, so you can dig along the pipe to find the valve.

How can I find my sprinkler lines without digging?

If you prefer to locate the lines and heads of your system without digging, rent a valve locator or even a metal detector and mark areas once found – better yet, call call 811, a federally mandated service, and ask someone to come out and locate the system for you.

How do you find underground sprinkler wires?

How do you manually turn off irrigation valves?

Where is the main sprinkler system valve usually installed?

valve boxes
In newer lawn irrigation systems, the valves should be installed in valve boxes. These can often be seen easily. There is a single valve box located near where the irrigation pipes enter the ground in small yards.

How do you replace a reticulation solenoid valve?

How do you test a reticulation solenoid?

How do you fix a retic solenoid?

How do I find buried sprinkler heads?

Measure the distance between visible sprinkler heads with a measuring tape. Sprinkler heads will likely be spaced evenly in a set pattern across your landscape. Look for an unusually wide gap between otherwise evenly spaced heads; a buried sprinkler head may sit midway between them.

How much do sprinkler valves cost?

It’s a fairly easy job to locate and replace broken sprinkler heads, and even to reset a controller, but it’s much more difficult to locate broken or leaking pipes and valves. You’ll probably need to call an irrigation service specialist to do that for you for an average cost of $75–$250.

Can one sprinkler valve control two zones?

Running multiple zones at once is usually not possible due water-pressure and flow limitations at residential properties. As with any standard irrigation controller, you can wire multiple solenoids/valves to the same zone output if you want.

Watch as I find a sprinkler valve using an underground wire finder.

I bought this house with no knowledge of where anything was with the irrigation, and have been chasing down leaks, valve boxes, sprinkler heads, etc.

This is an effective way to find the approximate location of a valve box to help narrow down where you should prod your lawn.

A couple details with this method:

1) You need to verify your wiring is actually good and activates the valve. If the wire has been split or corroded and separated, this method will not work. Verify a working valve at your controller using a multimeter, or simply turning the zone on to confirm water starts flowing at your meter.

2) You’ve unhooked the power supply.
