Not everyone who wants to own a pool can afford it, and some people who can afford it don’t have room for it on their property. However, those who face these obstacles should not give up on their dream of owning a swimming pool. A plunge pool can fit your modest budget or your limited space.

What is a Plunge Pool?

A plunge pool is a small, often deep pool designed for wading or lounging. They are perfect for those who like to sit on the pool steps and have a cup of tea in the summer, or for those who live in very hot climates and use their pools primarily for cooling off. Due to their size, you cannot swim in a plunge pool, but you can do other types of exercise, such as water aerobics.

Submersible pools are popular in Europe and Australia, but they’re just starting to emerge in the United States. They tend to be more appealing to those interested in aesthetic pool value and lower pool ownership and maintenance costs. Unlike full-size pools, plunge pools can be set up in a small yard and maintained on a shoestring budget. Unlike above ground pools, plunge pools can fit perfectly into a stunning landscape and design background.

The term “plunge pool” generally refers to a swimming pool designed for recreational purposes. Similar pools include those with a fountain that allows the user to swim against the current in a small space, sometimes called a lap pool, infinity pool, oroverflowing swimming pool. The line between these types of pools can be blurred because some pools are equipped with some kind of jet.

How big is the plunge pool?

The size of the plunge pool can vary greatly. However, typical sizes are around 8×8 feet to 8×16 feet. Because they come in all shapes and sizes, the absolute volume can vary greatly, from round pools with a 10 foot diameter to semi-circular pools with an 8 foot radius or square pools with 8 foot sides.

Because they are small, most plunge pools are rectangular to create the most usable space. However, just like standard size pools, you can have pools of any shape. Semi-circular, circular and L-shaped pools are also popular. Custom plunge pools come in almost any shape imaginable.

How deep is the pool?

There is no rule as to the depth of a plunge pool, but most are around 4 to 8 feet deep. Those who want to exercise there may want their pool to be a little deeper, and those who want to sit on a shelf inside the pool may want the pool to be a little shallower. Here is a diagram I made for what a plunge pool might look like. As you can see, it can be very deep and narrow.

What is the water temperature in the plunge pool?

Typically, plunge pools are blocks of cold water. However, some of them are designed to be used as a spa at certain times and as a cold pool at other times. Cold doesn’t mean cold either, as there are plenty of heaters for plunge pools. Heaters can ensure pools maintain a comfortable temperature all year round for those who use their pools for exercise or just for a quick dip even in the winter.

Some athletes choose to keep their plunge pools at very low temperatures (50-60 degrees Fahrenheit), while many choose to keep them at normal pool temperatures (75-85 degrees). There is no specific “right” temperature for a plunge pool, just your personal opinion. In hot regions a fire pit may not be necessary, while in colder regions it may be absolutely necessary.

Advantages of soaking pools

Soaking pools have many advantages, some more practical and others more aesthetic. Specifically, things like chemical usage and installation costs:

  • Immersion tanks have significantly lower installation costs than standard tanks
  • Sophrology and sensory stimulation
  • Easy to maintain
  • Those with smaller lots may fit a plunge pool but not a standard size pool
  • Reduced electricity consumption for filters and heaters

Aesthetically, a plunge pool can offer a lot as a design feature. They can work well with modern designs like a square with sharp edges, blue water, or they can adapt to artistically overgrown lawns like a stone pond. Do you want to install a fountain in your garden? A plunge pool with a fountain inside makes the water feature double.

How much does a plunge pool cost?

The cost of a plunge pool varies widely depending on the size and style you choose, your location in the water, and your individual wants and needs. The average is about half the cost of a standard size pool. Of course, fancy features and architectural design can significantly increase that base price.

Read my price breakdown atswimming pool costfor a full analysis.

Just like the biggest swimming pool, plunge pools are typically constructed in one of three ways: vinyl liner, fiberglass shell, or concrete. Vinyl pools are generally the cheapest, while concrete tends to be the most expensive, but also the highest quality option. There are pros and cons to each type of material when it comes to installing a plunge pool. Concrete is the easiest option to customize, but fiberglass and vinyl pools are also available in many styles.

Can I create my own plunge pool?

Regardless of their size, plunge pools are swimming pools. This means that all of the same structural and design requirements needed to install a successful swimming pool are required to install a plunge pool. For most people, successfully installing a plunge pool is simply beyond their skill set.

Depending on where you live and the size of your plunge pool design, there may be building codes that apply and building permits required. You may also need the help of a designer if you want to customize the shape, size or features of your pool. Even if you choose a standard size and don’t have any building codes to follow, installing a pool correctly only requires certain skills and expertise.

Starting a project and then having to hire someone to complete it, or worse, starting from scratch, can cost you tens of thousands of dollars more than just hiring a professional upfront. For this and other reasons, it’s best to find a great builder and work with them to create your vision…and we can help!

A plunge pool (or plunge basin or waterfall lake) is a deep depression in a stream bed at the base of a waterfall; it is created by the erosional forces of falling water on the rocks at fall’s base where the water impacts. The term may refer to the water occupying the depression, or the depression itself.

Plunge pools are formed by the natural force of falling water, such as at a waterfall or cascade; they also result from man-made structures such as some spillway designs, Plunge pools are often very deep, generally related to the height of fall, the volume of water, the resistance of the rock below the pool and other factors. The impacting and swirling water, sometimes carrying rocks within it, abrades the riverbed into a basin, which often features rough and irregular sides. Plunge pools can remain long after the waterfall has ceased flow or the stream has been diverted. Several examples of former plunge pools exist at Dry Falls in the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington.

Plunge pools are fluvial features of erosion which occur in the youthful stage of river development, characterized by steeper gradients and faster water flows. Where softer or fractured rock has been eroded back to a knickpoint, water continues to bombard its base. Because this rock is often less resistant than overlying strata, the water from the higher elevation continues eroding downward until an equilibrium is achieved.

A somewhat similar bowl-shaped feature developed by flowing water, as opposed to falling water, is known as a scour hole. These occur both naturally and as a result of bridge building.
