Multi-read content how to winterize geraniums

Geraniums(Pelargonium x hortorum) are grown as annuals in most parts of the United States, but are actually tender perennials. This means that with a little care it is possible to make geraniums last all winter. Best of all, it’s easy to learn how to keep geraniums through the winter.

Storing geraniums for the winter can be done in three ways. Consider these different ways.

How to keep geraniums over winter in pots

When overwintering potted geraniums, dig up your geraniums and place them in a pot suitable for their roots.Size of geraniumsback a third. Water the pot thoroughly and place it in a cool but well-lit place indoors.

If the cool area you’re thinking of isn’t getting enough light, put on a lamp or a lamp withfluorescent bulbvery close to the factory. Keep this light on for 24 hours. This will provide enough light for the geranium to survive the winter indoors, although it may suffer a little.leggy.

How to Overwinter Geraniums by Sleeping Them

The cool thing about geraniums is that they go into hibernation easily, which means you can store them the same way as soft bulbs. Storing geraniums for the winter using this method means that you will dig up the plant in the fall and carefully remove the soil from the roots. The roots should not be clean, but not dusty.

Hang the tree upside down in your basement or garage, somewhere around 50 F. (10 C.). Once a month, soak the roots of the geranium in water for an hour, then hang the plant again. The geranium will lose its leaves, but the stem will still be alive. In the spring, replant the geraniums in the ground and they will rise again.

How to Save Geraniums Over Winter Using Cuttings

Although cuttings aren’t technically a way to keep geraniums through the winter, it is a way to ensure you have inexpensive geraniums for next year.

Start by taking cuttings 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) from the green (still soft, non-woody) part of the plant. Cut the leaves in the lower half of the cut. Dip the cup inroot hormones, if you choose. Stick the cup in a jar filled withvermiculite. Make sure the pot has good drainage.

Place the pot with the cuttings in a plastic bag to keep the air around the cuttings moist. The cuttings will root in six to eight weeks. Once the cuttings are rooted, repot themgourd. Keep them in a cool, sunny place until they can come out again.

Now that you know how to freeze geraniums in three different ways, you can choose what works best for you. Letting geraniums last through winter will reward you with big, lush geraniums long before your neighbors buy them.
