Popular questions about how does reflectix work

how does reflectix work?

(Most Reflectix® products are reflective (shiny) on both sides.) The reflective insulation benefit is derived from the interaction of the highly-reflective surface with the air space. If the reflective surface is in contact with another building material, it becomes a conductor (transmitting the energy by conduction).

Does Reflectix keep heat in or out?

It helps reduce heat – though not as good as the solid cover – but the advantages of letting in light and allowing us to see through it is worth it. And if it is letting in too much heat we can add the reflective sunshade behind it. We also have pieces of Reflectix that fit in the passenger and driver door windows.

Does Reflectix work if you cover it?

Note: if you cover Reflectix it essentially negates its insulating value as its mechanism of action is reflecting heat off its aluminum face (hence the name). Sandwiching Reflectix between two pieces of fabric means it is doing very little insulating.

Which way should Reflectix face?

Does Reflectix work for cold?

How much of an air gap does Reflectix need?

This product specifically states on it in big red letters “R-8 WITH AIRSPACE” and “R-6.0 WITHOUT AIRSPACE.” The company’s website says “The product provides an R-8.0 when installed with a 0.75” air gap between the duct and the insulation, and R-6.0 when installed direct to the duct without a spacer.”

Got tired of the longer videos taking so long (DAYS!) to upload,

so I’m trying to make these shorter! Might be easier to watch too!

That’s my new goal!

In this video, I finally got around to putting some Reflectix insulation up in my ceiling. I hate insulation, not sure why, but it just isn’t something I want to mess with. For anyone who wonders, I did buy some fiberglass insulation for the ceiling, but haven’t put it up yet. Maybe when it gets cold. Maybe.

Anyway, this is Reflectix, its “foil over bubble wrap” insulation, and while it doesn’t have a high “R-Value” it does pretty well, in what it is designed to do, it blocks and reflects the heat. In this case, the heat from the sun shining on the roof, to keep it from heating up the house so much.

Using the digital thermometer, you know, the one you can point at something? Anyway, the ceiling / exposed OSB of the roof is about 129 degrees, and the reflectix is about 95 degrees, so I guess that helps? At least I don’t have as much heat radiating down on me.

But its Texas here, and its still hot. Next project, eventually, is to cut bigger vents in the gables and probably do some fans to help move the hot air out. Some day.

I’m uploading this video in 480P, usually I shoot and upload 720P videos,

lets see if anyone notices?

Also, if you are actually reading the description, do you have any way to watch 4K videos?

Like a 4K TV or something, just curious.
