Multi-read content how to get rid of small fruit flies

Fruit flies arethe worst thing. One day you have an absolutely adorable banana on your counter, and the next you’re hosting a swarm of bugs and they’re just too welcoming.

Fruit flies can appear at any time of the year, but they are especially common during the summer months when fruits and vegetables are generally riper. They lay their eggs on rotting or fermented food, which hatch into hundreds of larvae. Then those larvae lay eggs, then those larvae lay eggs, and before you know it, you have to move out and hand the house over to the flies.

Luckily, before returning your keys, there are a few things you can do to get rid of goons. If you follow these steps, you will greatly reduce the number of these little tyrants and get your kitchen back.

To prevent

It’s much easier to keep fruit flies out of your space if your kitchen is clean and tidy. Start by cleaning out any areas where food could accumulate and spoil. This means that you should leave your trash outside or in a bin with a tight-fitting lid. Put your food crumbs in a compost bag and store them in the freezer, instead of leaving them at room temperature. Empty the sink in case old food remains there.

If you usually leave fruits and vegetables on the counter, try moving them to a cooler place or covering them, especially high-sugar fruits that ripen quickly. Try to keep your bananas and tomatoes in the cooler or under the dome. Yes, the tomato drawer is a thing.

How to trap fruit flies

If fruit flies are making their home in your kitchen, there are ways to trap them. They love fermented fruit, so mix some dish soap with stale beer, wine, or apple cider vinegar. Pour water over the mixture until it is frothy and leave the glass or bowl on the counter where you spot the flies. They will reach the glass for the fruit sugar, but will be trapped in the soap bubbles. You can also line the top of a beer bottle or vinegar glass with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in it. Fruit flies can enter but cannot fly away.

If you’re looking for an alcohol-based solution, there are commercially available traps or you can make your own spray by mixing isopropyl alcohol and water. This will kill flies on contact.

If all else fails…

Wait for them to come out. Fruit flies only live about two weeks, and when temperatures get colder, they don’t live as long. You can have the sweet satisfaction of watching them fall as summer turns into autumn. Sip your pumpkin spice latte and smile, knowing you’ve survived the beasts for another season. Who’s responsible now, stealing?

The reality is that fruit flies are mostly annoying, but they do pose slight health risks. They can carry bacteria or germs when they land on food and surfaces in your home, which can sometimes lead to health issues. If you are cleaning fly-infested areas, you should wash your hands afterwards and wash any fruits and vegetables that may be on the counter before eating them.

The fight against fruit flies starts with the fruit itself. Fruit flies get into your home by coming in on pieces of fruit you bring in from the market, so when you first notice the flies, toss any overripe fruit you may have sitting out on the counter, and promptly take out the trash. Store any new produce in the fridge until the infestation is gone. Then clean any containers or surfaces, making sure not to forget the bottom of your garbage can and the drain of your kitchen sink.

If the flies persist, you can set up a trap by pouring apple cider vinegar into a microwave-safe bowl. Add a few drops of dish soap and microwave for 30 seconds. Sit the trap on the counter for a day or two. The warm aromatics of the vinegar will attract the flies, and the dish soap will break the surface tension so that once a fly touches the liquid, it will fall right in.

Stephanie asked: How do I get rid of pesky fruit flies?

Answer:

What you need-

1) Pesky fruit flies

2) Container (like a glass)

3) Balsamic vinegar

4) 2 sheets of plastic wrap

5) Paring knife

Fill a container 1/8 of the way full with balsamic vinegar. Cover the container with taut plastic wrap. Take your paring knife and pierce 4 small holes on the top of the plastic wrap. Leave it out overnight. Take off the old plastic wrap the next day since they may have laid eggs on it. Replace it with a new sheet of plastic wrap and pierce 4 small holes again (Repeat for 2-3 days). If you notice a few are flying out, put a second layer of plastic wrap or make sure your holes aren’t too big. Make sure you put your fly catcher in an area you think it’ll be most effective.

The fruit fly is a tiny filth fly that is attracted to over-ripened and rotting fruit. They feed on and breed in the decaying organic matter of the fruit.

For proper fruit fly control, you need to first identify the fruit fly. Fruit flies are extremely small, typically around an eighth of an inch in length. They are commonly tan in color. Their most distinguishing feature is their bright red eyes. Their red eyes will help you tell them apart from similar flies like Phorid flies.

Fruit flies are most commonly found buzzing around fruit bowls or fruit left on countertops in kitchens. They can also be found around residue left behind by spilled sugary or alcoholic drinks, around trash cans, kitchen sinks and garbage disposals, and floor drains.

To get control of fruit flies, first sanitize your home or business. Dispose of any rotting fruit or vegetables. Regularly take out the trash, keeping the garbage in a sealed bin. And be sure to clean countertops frequently.

Next, treat the drains in your home or business with Forid Drain Gel Cleaner. This is a concentrated biological product designed to treat organic matter build-up in sinks, drains, and garbage disposals.

Forid’s organic Microbial Grease Degrader immediately starts breaking down organic waste, eliminating the fruit fly’s food source and breeding site. Apply Forid using four ounces per drain.

Pour the Forid around the lip of the drain so that it coats and runs down the sides of the drain. This process should be repeated daily for five to seven days.

Also use Vector 960 fruit fly traps. This is a ready to use fruit fly trap that comes filled with a food grade liquid attractant. The lid has ten vent holes that will give fruit flies access to the attractant and prevent them from flying back out.

Simply remove the cellophane wrapper to expose the attractant, and secure the lid. Place the trap in areas you have seen fruit fly activity. Depending on the room size, you may need multiple traps. And because it is a liquid attractant, keep it out of reach from kids and pets.

Finally, use Pyrid aerosol as a space spray to kill any remaining fruit flies. This is a pyrethrin aerosol that provides quick contact kills. Pyrid is also great for eliminating many other pests. Spray the Pyrid where you see fruit fly activity. This does not have a residual, so flies must come into contact with the spray to be effective.

Prevent fruit flies from returning by keeping your property as clean as possible. Continue to take out the trash, clean kitchens, and minimize decaying organic material.

Fruit flies are extremely annoying and can spread filth, but you can control easily yourself with these professional products and tips from Solutions Pest and Lawn.
