Refinishing Wood Dining without Stripping Original Stain

How to Refinish a Dining Table without Stripping Off Original Finish

How to Refinish Wood Dining Table with Gel Stain

Sometimes it takes a lot of work to tackle a bigger project, like remodeling the dining table. To begin with a person who will most likely anticipate the process of elimination from the original ending. This step alone could deter even the most enthusiastic party room workers. Now I know there are people who can do their wood stripping magic and they don’t find the task too difficult. On the other hand, me and maybe you might as well disagree. Hmm. I’ll use the easiest method behind the second curtain, please. This article shows you an easier way to successfully repaint a wooden dining table without having to peel off the original finish.

How to Refinish a Dining Table without Stripping Original Coat

The key to recoloring wood dining table tops without having to peel off the original factory finish is to create a soft wood grain look with a gel polish stain. This is followed by several coats of a durable clear sealer. It’s really not that hard to do. The main thing you will need, besides supplies, is TIME. It will take a few days for each coat to dry and a few more days for the primer to dry.

I have used a similar process in the past toFix ugly stains on our wooden crate side tables. Honestly, the results are amazing. The surface of our barrel table holds up so well that I know it will do the same for our golden pine dining table.

1980-1990 circa golden pine table

Here’s the step-by-step process for refinishing an 1980s-1990s pine dining table top with a gel polish stain. Do not peel off the original factory layer (see my “additional tips” below before using this method onolder style table). This stain remover gel can also be used on any other part of the table, as long as the original paint is stain and not paint. In our case, the table legs were already painted, so I just opted to repaint the legs with chalk paint.Note: gel stains can be applied to the paint, but this article will not cover any details on this topic. See “additional tips” below.

Whichever coating you choose, be sure to follow product label instructions for use and safety. Also guarantee the drying and curing time (maybe up to 20 days, but should be stated on the product specification).

Additional tips to follow for success when repainting your dining table with frost stains

  • This gel staining technique can also be used on painted surfaces
  • , however, I recommend painting the surface with a base coat of a neutral color that will mimic the lightest wood color you’re trying to achieve, such as sky blue, tan, or off-white.
  • If a layer of your surface has paint
  • , be sure to use a primer that can be applied over the paint. Some topcoats are intended for wood surfaces only because they penetrate the wood.
  • To clean products stained with gel
  • stain brush, be sure to use mineral oil or some kind of oil-based stain remover.
  • For old and older tables:
