Top Tips for Gluing PVC Pipe

Photo: istockphoto.com

Polyvinyl chloride pipe, commonly referred to as PVC, is used in a wide variety of residential applications, from plumbing to a wide range ofawesome craft projects(such as DIY shelves, storage cabinets and even furniture). Joining a pipe to a fitting requires a specially formulated primer and cement – not conventional adhesives but a chemical solvent that melts the surface of the PVC then quickly hardens to fuse the parts together. The result is a tight, airtight bond similar to what you get with solder metal.

This process includes applying a primer to the outside of the pipe and inside of the connection, cleaning and preparing the PVC. After about 10 seconds, then put cement in those places, then insert the pipe into the joint and allow the cement to solidify.

As simple as it sounds, PVC pipe bonding is easy to damage, and if you make a mistake, there’s no going back – you’ll have to cut the pipe and start over. So pay attention to this list of do’s and don’ts to ensure the success of your PVC projects.

DO NOT use the wrong type of cement.

There are many different cements (and primers) on the market that are formulated for many types of plastic pipe. Read labels carefully and remember to choose a cement specifically made for PVC. Be aware that a pipe cement you can see on the shelf is made for CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) pipes, which have similar names butNotan acceptable substitute. Popular PVC cement manufacturers include Weld-On (look on amazon), Oatey (look on amazon), Gorilla (look on amazon) and more.

DO a dry fit.

Before gluing PVC pipe, line up all the pieces of pipe and make sure that when they are connected they fit together snugly and are cut to the exact length you need. Then mark and number the connections as necessary so you don’t glue the connections together.

DO NOT ignore safety warnings.

PVC and cement primers are difficult to use and manufacturers recommend avoiding contact with eyes and skin. Before you begin, remove your goggles (ideally with side shields) and protective gloves. You can spread a tarp or towel over the work surface to minimize the difficulty of cleanup in the event of a drop. PVC pipe cement is a chemical solvent that can remove harmful toxins, so be sure to work in a well-ventilated area.

DO NOT leave jagged edges.

After youcut pvc pipewith a special tool called a PVC pipe cutter (see example on Amazon), be sure to smooth any burrs on the edges of the cut surface with coarse sandpaper or a utility knife. Mounted on the left, the burrs can catch debris flowing through the pipe, causing blockages or affecting sealing effectiveness.

Do it quick.

After priming, you only have about 10 seconds before applying the cement. Then you will immediately mount the pipe in the fitting. Proceed quickly when bonding PVC pipes; If the cement starts to dry before you’re ready, cover it up.

SCREW for a secure seal.

Turn the hose a quarter turn as you push it into the fitting. This will allow the glue to spread, providing a more comfortable feel. Hold the tube in place and snap it on for at least 30 seconds; less and the pipe can come out.

Sufficient healing time SHOULD be allowed.

After holding the tube in place for 30 seconds, allow the tube to sit for at least 20 minutes before continuing with the treatment so that the cement can harden. Check the product instructions to find out how long the glue needs to cure before you can use it on your project, usually within 24 hours.
