Area Rug Tips and Ideas – Living Room and Family Room

When it comes to decorating with area rugs, some people may follow what we call “rules” and I say’Rule of shmules’- rules are appreciated, such as unpainted wood and moderation.

However, there are a fewshareguides and tips you can use to help you choose the best size and style of rug for your room. And while there are plenty of ideas for every room in your home, this article will apply to spaces like living rooms and family rooms.

Family room with stone fireplace, Sherwin Williams Cyberspace, leather, laminate wood flooring, chartreuse chair. Kylie M INteriors E-design and home

And you might think, ‘but I just need to know what size I need!’ But the thing is, once you know how YOU want to put it on, grab the tips below and your tape measure and it will tell you your size. need!

General Mat Guidelines and Rules

Carpet Tips

2 pieces should sit the same distance apart on the mat

Whether you want your rug to go under your furniture or ALL of it, this concept should apply to at least 2 of your main pieces of furniture (the odd arrangement may fit, but assuming yours doesn’t, capiche? )

Sometimes you can’t even finish it, and that’s okay, do your best because the more the better!

Carpet Tips

Carpet-to-carpet area

If you’re going to lay a rug over your rug, you’ll want to find one that’s thicker than the rug you’re laying it on (it doesn’t need to be too thick, but at least a little). Although some rugs are thin, tapestries are beautiful, they won’t lay flat on the rug and will get bumpy when you put things on them.

Carpet Tips

Don’t be too small

If your mat doesn’t have at least 2 coins, you can also lick a postage stamp, smack it, and call it a day.

I think the photo above proves my point well…

And THIS is the exception…

This bad boy makes me so happy. The unusual shape and hesitant style make this a perfect rug without having to be a normal size.

Carpet Tips

The long side of the rug should follow the longest part of the furniture

Now, sometimes that doesn’t work, but in an ideal world, your longest piece of furniture would line up with the long side of the rug. If you can’t make it (due to other room issues), at least make sure the 6-inch mat is visible on either side of your longest room (as suggested in the following tip). carpet. small!

Carpet Tips

The rug MUST extend at least 6 inches or more beyond the hands of your main furniture

Really, this should be more of a rule than a guideline. If your rug lines up with the armrests of the sofa, it will look absolutely stunning. This point follows what I said in the Guidelines

home staging and decorating ideas for the living room with sherwin williams repose gray or benjamin moore wish with neutral couch, cream shag rug, chrome,

To keep things balanced and healthy, you need your mat to be at least 6 inches longer than your arms on each side…at least.

Carpet Tips

8 × 10 mins

I have to say, I’ve never come across a living room that looks good with a rug smaller than 8×10.7×9/5×8 – that size if accentuated by a smaller living space. If you have an INSTANTLY small living room, I’d make an 8×10 rug. Keeping in mind that the rug can be at least 24 inches from 2 walls, even a 10×12 room will also fit an 8× 10 mats!

Carpet Tips

Review your room

Your rug can define the rest of your space with its color, texture, and pattern.

Although your rug may look good “now”, trying not to choose a rug can limit your future options if you want to change things up from time to time.

Carpet Tips

Don’t be afraid to put a rug on the wooden floor

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had clients say to me,‘…But I don’t want to cover my beautiful wooden floor!’Although I appreciate the sentiment behind it (wait, not really), you don’t necessarily need to do your floor justice by going bare. Area rugs often help define a wood floor, especially when there are other pieces of wood in a space like a table, entertainment center, wall. They also add sonic and textural value.

I like the living room above, but feels like a float and sectional couch without the rug to anchor them.

It’s like a framed photo. As a bare canvas it is certainly beautiful, but once framed it really shines.

Ruler and Mat Ideas

  • If you have a focal point like a fireplace or TV stand, try centering your rug.
  • In an ideal world, you would want your rug to focus on 2 things (i.e. the sofa and the fireplace), however, at a minimum, it should focus on 1 of them.
  • The length of your rug should be centered on your longest piece of furniture. If you have a couch with a loveseat next to it, you’ll want this rug to at least focus on the couch.
  • Your choice of rug may be determined by your age. I’ve been to many homes where I’ve been like, ‘Well, what about a faux rug?’ And they said, ‘There, did that honey – lived there for 20 years!’ So I take that as a no?
  • Try not to place your rug directly in front of anything (eg a sofa or a fireplace). If it can’t fit there, it needs to be at least 4 inches in the front.

Popular questions about how far should rug be from fireplace

how far should rug be from fireplace?

four feet away

How far should an area rug be from a fireplace?

12″ to 18″
12″ to 18″: Distance between rug edge and closest wall, fireplace hearth, or bump out.

Do you center rug to fireplace?

The rug really needs to be centered on a major architectural element (fireplace, large windows, main focal wall) in the room. It doesn’t necessarily need to be smack dab in the middle of the room – you want its placement to be the island for the visual weight of the room.

What kind of rug goes in front of fireplace?

Hearth rugs are placed in front of a fireplace, which in turn has a very specific shape, size, and design. While these rugs come in a variety of shapes, the most common are; square, half circle, half-round and rectangle. The size and shape of the rug is selected based on the style and size of the fireplace.

How far away should a rug be from a wall?

In most rooms, the rules are simple: Leave at least six inches between the end of the rug and the walls (or counters, in the case of kitchens); leave all furniture legs off rugs in busy thoroughfares like entryways and hallways, and let the space dictate your choice of rug size.

How do you tell if a rug is too big for a room?

If a rug is too small, it will appear as if it is floating in the room. If it is too large it will overpower the room and make the room appear smaller than it is.

How can you tell if a rug is fire resistant?

Yes, if the carpet or rug has had a fire-retardant treatment or is made of fibers that have had a fire-retardant treatment, it must be labeled with the letter “T.” The letter “T” should be legible and conspicuous on the label and/or invoice or other paper related to the carpet and rug, if commercially installed.

Is it possible to have too many rugs?

When using more than one rug, it’s better when the rugs complement each other in style. If not, you could end up with a jarring or unpleasant effect. Too many “warring” patterns in a room will do away with any sense of harmony.

How much floor should show around an area rug?

In general, the rule of thumb is to allow approximately 18 inches of exposed floor space around the perimeter of an area rug, however the overall size and location of the room should also be taken into consideration.

Is an area rug necessary?

Yes you need an area rug. The room will never look finished without one. Two approaches are if you want the room to look as big as possible, run the rug underneath the sofas. If you are not concerned about that, just use a size that fits in front of the sofas but at least as long as the sofas.

Are all wool rugs fire resistant?

Wool lasts longer than chemical, recycled or other synthetic fibers. Wool carpets have exceptionally low levels of flammability and represent the best choice for creating safe, healthy indoor environments. Wool is naturally flame-resistant and its performance exceeds that of all other commonly used textile fibers.

What should I put on the floor of my fireplace?

To keep your home cleaner and safer, consider these three choices for around your fireplace.
  1. Laminate Flooring. Laminate flooring looks like wood but is made from a synthetic material that makes it extremely durable. …
  2. Hardwood Flooring. You have probably seen hardwood flooring surrounding a fireplace. …
  3. Carpeting.

What makes a hearth rug fire resistant?

Nylon & Olefin Hearth Rugs

Nylons are made of polymer fibers and are considered the second-best synthetic materials for fire-resistant rugs. Rather than igniting, nylon melts down slowly when they contact fire sparks, coal, or embers, making them a safe and inexpensive option compared to other hearth rugs.

What size rug do I need for a 12×12 room?

How to find the right rug size
Room Size Rug Size Examples
4′ x 5′ 2′ x 3′ Entryways, bathrooms
7′ x 10′ 5′ x 8′ Living rooms, bedrooms
10′ x 12′ 8′ x 10′ Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms
11′ x 14′ 9′ x 12′ Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms

Does a large rug make a room look bigger or smaller?

Rugs or carpets can also help you create the illusion of a larger room. Large area rugs (avoid placing several small rugs), can make your place look more prominent. They should be within 12 inches of the walls on all sides.

Melissa demonstrates how a Fiberglass Hearth Rug reacts to fire.

Be advised that this demonstration was done in a controlled environment to show the effectiveness of a fireplace or hearth rug. DO NOT try this at home.

We placed a hearth rug over a piece of regular carpeting to simulate your home flooring. We then put a hot piece of firewood directly from the wood stove on the rug to simulate an ember or log falling out of your fireplace or wood stove onto the rug.

Good Protection – Polyester fireplace and hearth rugs are the most economical rug option. They are made of 100% colorfast polyester and they meet U.S. product safety standards for flammability (FF1-70). A polyester rug will char but WILL NOT burn if a hot log or ember falls on them.

Better Protection – 100% wool rugs provide style and protection for your hearth that you can count on. The advantage to wool is that it is naturally self-extinguishing and if it does char, the spot can often be rubbed away leaving little visible damage. Meets the CPSC standard (FF 1-70) for flammability of carpets.

Best Protection – Fiberglass rugs are the safest option for you fireplace or hearth as the embers will not burn the fiberglass face of this rug. Fiberglass does not support fire so if a log or ember lands on the hearth rug it will just burn out. Don’t let your floor or carpet be ruined by flying embers from your fireplace. Meets the CPSC standard (FF 1-70) for flammability of carpets.

We hope this demonstration proved helpful to you in choosing a fireplace or hearth rug for your home. Please remember that this demo was done as an example: DO NOT TRY AT HOME.
