Multi-read content what is phantom loading

Definition: Phantom load is the phenomenon in whichdevices that consume electricity even when turned off. The rotating energy meter disc will increase the meter reading, but the devices do not consume energy.This type of load is also calledvampireWherevirtual download. Virtual charging mainly occurs in “electronic” devices.

The virtual load is used to check the rated current ofenergy measurement.The actual layout of the load will waste a lot of energy. The virtual load consumes very little power compared to the real load, and for this reason it is used to verify the clock.

In phantom loads, the pressure coil and the current coil are driven separately by the power supply. The pressure coil is powered from a small supply voltage and a current which supplies the current coil with a very small voltage.

Pressure and current coil circuits have low impedance (less impedance to electron movement) because a high current rating flows through them. The total current supplied to the phantom load is the sum of the pressure coil current supplied at normal voltage and the supply current coil current at low voltage.

Example of phantom load

Consider a DC energy meter with a nominal voltage of 220 V and a current of 9 A. The inductance of the voltage coil and the current coil are 4400 Ω and 0.1 Ω respectively. The power consumed by direct and indirect phantom load is explained below.

Direct Download Arrangement

The circuit for the forward load is shown in the figure below.direct-loading-arrangement

The power consumed by the voltage coil circuit is calculated as follows

Power = (220) 2/400 = 48400/4400 = 11watt

The power consumed by the current circuit is expressed in

Power = 220 9 = 1980watt

Total power consumed by voltage circuit and circuit

Power = 11 watts 1980 watts = 1991 watts

Ghost loading layout

The phantom power circuit is shown in the figure below.current-loading

The power consumption of the pressure coil is given below.

P = (220) 2/4400 = 11 watts

The current winding of the phantom charging arrangement is driven separately by the 9V battery. The capacitance of the current coil is measured as

Power = 9 9 = 81 watts

The total power consumed by the virtual load is expressed in

Total power = 11 watts 81 watts = 92 watts

The example above shows that in phantom pressure, the load and the current coil are driven separately by the meter. Hence less power loss in phantom load compared to active load.

Popular questions about what is phantom loading

What is meant by phantom load?

Have you ever heard of the term, “phantom load”? This term is used to describe any appliance or electronic that still uses electricity or “standby power” when turned off.

What is direct loading and phantom loading?

Direct loading requires rated voltage and current and so power is large. Testing at various power factor is also easy in phantom loading . It requires only a phase shifting transformer to shift phase of voltage. Phantom loading is used to test wattmeter and energy meter.

What is the advantage of phantom loading?

Phantom loading is a fictitious loading that resembles the actual full-load conditions. The main advantage of testing a meter under phantom loading conditions over direct loading one is that the power or energy consumption is comparatively too small.

What causes phantom loads?

In fact, the worst offenders of phantom loads in your house are typically related to entertainment systems: TVs, cable boxes, video game systems, audio systems, phone/device charges and other related equipment are the most likely sources of phantom loads in your home.

How do I get rid of phantom loading?

Here are five easy but effective ways to reduce your phantom load:
  1. Use ‘smart strips’ or power bars. …
  2. Identify the prime sources of phantom loads. …
  3. Unplug charged electronic devices. …
  4. Use ‘sleep’ mode instead of a screensaver. …
  5. Buy electronics and appliances with the Energy Star label.

How much does phantom load cost?

Unfortunately, this convenience wastes energy and increases carbon emissions. According to Cornell University and The Daily Green, phantom load can cost the average home $200 per year. So what kind of energy ghouls might prowl an unassuming person’s home?

What is this KVA?

A KVA is simply 1,000 volt amps. A volt is electrical pressure. An amp is electrical current. A term called apparent power (the absolute value of complex power, S) is equal to the product of the volts and amps.

What is 3phase energy meter?

Definition: The meter which is used for measuring the power of three phase supply is known as the three phase energy meter. The three phase meter is constructed by connecting the two single phase meter through the shaft. The total energy is the sum of the reading of both the elements.

What is creeping error?

The creeping error occurs because of excessive friction. The main driving torque is absent at no load. Hence the disc rotates because of the additional torque provided by the compensating vane.

What is maximum demand meter?

Maximum Demand meter is used for monitoring thermal loading in Power Distribution systems, Networks, Machines etc. It indicates maximum loading current over a period. Short-period current peaks are not registered but long overloads are registered.

What is meant by direct loading?

Hello. Direct loading test is one of the basic & easiest test to calculate efficiency & regulation of transformer. Efficiency is ration of output power to the input power. Regulation is defined as change in secondary terminal voltage from no load to full load (keeping primary terminal voltage & temperature constant)

What are the applications of Transformers?

The main application of a transformer is to step-up or step-down the level of voltage or current in power plant generation stations, receiving end substations and distributing the electrical power to the consumer units for demotic and industrial applications.

What household items act as a phantom load?

  • Set-Top Box. It’s incredibly convenient to record shows automatically in the background, but that means that your PVR is always hard at work in the background. …
  • Router & Modem. …
  • Television. …
  • Blu Ray/DVD Player. …
  • Computer. …
  • Cordless Phone. …

How do you stop vampire powers?

Slay energy vampires with these four simple strategies:
  1. Unplug. Unplug. …
  2. Plug your appliances into power strips. Power strips let you toggle the power flow on and off. …
  3. Curb idle time. …
  4. Make smart upgrades.

Does standby use electricity?

Whenever you leave an appliance on standby – rather than switching it off at the plug – it continues to drain energy. According to Energy Saving Trust research, between 9-16% of the electricity consumed in homes is used to power appliances when they are in this standby mode.
