How to check mold in 6 steps

Mold infestations can often be seen or smelled, but they can also hide behind walls or under carpets. It’s not necessary to check if you can see or smell mold – that’s enough confirmation to call a professional and begin the repair process. Indoor mold testing may be necessary if required by a medical professional or necessary for legal purposes, such as suing a landlord. Another reason to consider getting tested is if you don’t see or smell mold in your home, but have unexplained mold-related symptoms. Always follow the instructions that come with the test suite (more on that below), but that’s generally what to expect:

Step 1: Perform a visual check

If you suspect you have mold, the first step is to perform a visual inspection of your home. You will recognize mold as spots that can appear in a variety of colors. Mold feeds on moisture, so pay special attention to roofs, windows, pipes,Basement, laundry room, bathroom, previously flooded space, etc. Mildew often occurs on fibrous surfaces such as drywall, upholstery, wallpaper, fabric, and cardboard. If you see signs of mold, call a professional.

Step 2: Buy a home test kit

If you don’t see mold but want to check for sure, order a home test kit. You can also order a kit if you see mold and need to identify it for health or legal reasons. You can order a test kit which includes the test with the price, such asDIY mold testor a test kit with optional lab tests, such asDIY Mold Armor Kit Mold Checker. The latter is preferable if you only want to confirm the presence of mold and do not want to identify it.

Step 3: Prepare the substrate

Most test kits use petri dishes and mold inoculants. Follow the product instructions to prepareblessed bread.

Step 4: Collect your sample

There are several ways to sample with a petri dish. The first is an indoor air quality method, where you leave the dish on a flat surface for an hour, then cover it with a lid. If you want to check your HVAC system for mold, insert the disk into the air duct and blow out the air for 10 minutes, then cover the dish. The final method is to use a cotton swab to wipe off any visible mold, then wipe the swab over the growing medium. This method is best if you can see the mold.

Step 5: Check your petri dish

After 48 hours, check your petri dish for signs of mold growth. If you don’t see mold, wait another 24 hours and check again. If you still don’t see mold, wait another 24 hours and check again. If you see no mold growth after 96 hours, your test found no mold. If you see mold on your test dish, you need to take additional steps to remove the mold.

Step 6: Submit your identification form

Follow the instructions provided to send your sample to the lab for testing. Keep in mind that some test kits include lab testing in the price of the product itself, while others require additional fees if you want your samples identified.

Products and tools you will need to check for mold in your home

The only thing you need to test for mold at home is a test kit. In addition to those mentioned above, several options are available:

  • Pro-Lab Mold Tester
  • :
  • This kit includes three tests. Your sample can be tested for an additional $40, with results sent via email or the company’s app.
  • MoldCheck Multi-Purpose Test Kit
  • :
  • This kit includes supplies to perform ten tests, which is ideal for whole house or continuous intrusion monitoring. However, there is no lab testing option, so you will have to find it yourself if identification is needed.
  • Immune Mold Test Kit:
  • Perform eight tests with this kit. Each plate can be tested for $33 each.
  • My Mold Detective
  • :
  • If you’re looking for a more advanced mold monitoring option, My Mold Detective is a reusable air sampling pump that collects samples in just five minutes. The device comes with four sample cassettes that can be tested in the lab for $35 each.

  • :
  • My Mold Detective can be reused multiple times, so order as many samples as possible to track your mold problem.

Don’t want to use chemicals? Here’s how to naturally check for mold in your home

If you’re concerned about the effects of harmful chemicals when testing your home for mold, don’t worry. Mold testing uses no chemicals and the kits are non-toxic.

In fact, the main thing you should worry about when testing for mold is the mold itself. If you collect mold samples directly using the swab technique, wear gloves and a mask to reduce your exposure to mold.

The essentials when checking for mold

The process for cleaning mold is the same whether it’s black mold or otherwise, so you don’t always need to check for mold if you can see or smell it. But if you have a specific reason to identify the types of mold in your home, or if you suspect you have mold but can’t find the source, it’s very easy to do a mold check that you do it yourself.

Is there a mold detector?

Mold testing kits help you detect and identify growing spores in your home through samples collected via the air or from the surface in question. Some give you results right away, while others ask you to package the samples and send them back to a lab for a professional examination.

How can you tell if black mold is toxic?

Pay attention to the color and consistency: We already talked about black mold above, though it’s more accurate to say that Stachybotrys chartarum has a greenish-black hue. Toxic mold can also have a grayish, soot-like texture, or a slimy, wet surface. In some cases, you may even notice furry orange or brown spots.

Do air purifiers help with mold?

An air purifier can also help in common places for mold in the home like a basement. Though an air purifier can help long term for mold spores in the air, only physically cleaning up the mold and removing the moisture that allowed it to grow will solve a visible mold growth problem.

Will a CT scan show mold exposure?

Imaging test.

A chest X-ray or computerized tomography (CT) scan — a type of X-ray that produces more-detailed images than conventional X-rays do — can usually reveal a fungal mass (aspergilloma), as well as characteristic signs of invasive aspergillosis and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis.

Each person’s body is affected by mold toxicity in different ways. Some experience constant migraines and headaches, shortness of breath, brain fog, fatigue or even depression. Since symptoms differ from person to person, they may not be quickly associated with mold exposure.

Can black mold behind walls harm you?

Mold spores can also become airborne and spread to other areas of your home such as carpets, and furniture.

How can I tell if I have mold in my walls?

If you don’t see signs of mold but you can smell it, it may be hidden in your walls. A musty smell is a good indicator that mold is growing in your home.

Be aware of signs that drywalls are moist such as:
  1. water stains.
  2. dark rings.
  3. discoloration.
  4. deterioration like peeling, bubbling or cracking of the paint or wallpaper.

Are home mold test kits accurate?

– Do-it-yourself mold test kits often cause people to make uninformed decisions. The levels of spores that are analyzed by the lab are not accurate and they cannot detect hidden mold, so the homeowner cannot properly assess the situation. People often do either too little or too much based on these results.

What should you do if you find black mold?

Here’s what to do:
  1. Invest in some safety goggles, safety gloves, and an N-95 respirator (you can find them at most hardware stores)
  2. If it’s a small, contained area, mix up a strong bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and let the bleach soak on the mold for 15 minutes.
  3. Clean with a stiff wire brush and rinse.
