They say good fences make good neighbors, and if that’s true, no fence makes a better neighbor than this one. It’s tough, durable, and guaranteed for the life of your house. And best of all, it’s maintenance-free. It’s not made of wood. It’s actually rigid vinyl plastic that can withstand heat up to 900 degrees. This new house needed a fence for security and pet control. The owners wanted two gates and because the terrain slopes in the backyard, they chose a fence built especially for their needs. Contractor Mark Carter came up with a style to compliment the home’s design.
Mark Carter: This one, as you can see, is seven foot tall. In addition to the height, we added extra rails for strength. Uh, not that we’d even need…need it for strength, but just to add a more beefy look. Uh, originally the homeowner wanted to put in rock columns and decided not to do so. So, instead of doing that, we even came up with a larger profile post than what is standard.
MH: There are several vinyl fence products on the market. The components for this one are manufactured by Croy Building Products of York, Nebraska and assembled by local contractors to fit the homeowner’s needs.
MC: We actually have a hundred, over 152 textbook style fences we can build. But this particular fence was built for and designed for the homeowner.
MH: The vinyl posts are made with titanium for strength and heat resistance. Parts like posts and slats come in tan, white and gray and can be selected for whatever look the homeowner wants, from privacy fence to decorative borders. The parts are prepared almost like wood. Slots for cross rails are routed. Templates ensure the fence’s vertical slats are uniformly spaced. Once the slats are cut, the ends are crimped so the parts snap together. The finished sections are assembled by the contractor before they’re taken to the site. Mark Carter and his assistant, Jeff, will make the sections into a finished fence.
Jeff Tinnon: The sections normally come in six-foot wide sections and we wanna make sure that these are six-foot on center. As you see, six-foot on center.
MH: Before the sections can be installed, the posts have to be set in piers.
JT: This is our pier for our gate post and we’ve got it 28 inches deep and we ultimately want a 12-inch hole. We have to make sure that we get it plumb.
MH: The piers with the posts in them are then filled with concrete.
JT: Basically uh, when he’s pouring the concrete in uh, I like to shake the posts and what that does is it helps the concrete settle really well in the hole. Since we normally dig these…the piers a little bit deep so that we can adjust our posts to the string line on the top and the reason we run the string line is so that we can keep the top of our fence even.
MH: Once the concrete sets, the sections can be snapped together.
JT: And they all pop in.
MH: To keep the fence horizontally solid, guides are glued on the bottom rails.
JT: As this glue dries, it will contract and suck itself back in and it won’t move.
MH: Perhaps the trickiest part is installing the gate. Hardware must be mounted on the posts and gate so the two parts match vertically. Then once the gate is screwed to the posts, the horizontal sections must be spaced so they’re symmetrical.
JT: We wanna make sure that these distances are equal so you might have to play with it a couple of different times. Check your distance.
MH: And finally, no gate will keep anything in without a latch. To give this fence maximum staying power, we used concrete twice – once in the piers as you saw earlier, and once inside the posts to give them weight and add strength. Concrete is poured all the way to the top on the end posts. Middle posts are filled halfway up. To finish, the post caps are glued on. Vinyl cost about the same as stained cedar fence, but is less expensive than ornamental iron or aluminum. Since it’s permanent and never requires painting, it’s certainly one way to make good neighbors. Case closed.
