How To Clean Your Front-Loader Washing Machine

Over the years I have received dozens of emails from readers complaining of an unpleasant odor coming fromHigh efficiency front loading washing machine. I’d be happy to look into that, but I don’t actually own a front-loading washing machine! It is therefore difficult for me to adopt the usual “hands-on” approach to finding solutions to these family problems. 🙂 So I did the only thing I could do – I searched the internet for information! I read dozens of articles online about washing machine problems, until I figured out pretty well what was causing those nasty washing machine smells.

Since HE washers use less water and energy than standard washers, detergent residue, dirt, mildew, and minerals can eventually build up inside the machine. This buildup often leads to bad odors and can even leave your washed clothes looking shabby.

But luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to help keep the inside of your washing machine clean and in good working order. And luckily, the machine will do most of the work for you! (I want to quickly mention that one of my neighbors kindly offered to let me use her front-loading washing machine for the photos in this article. I don’t know what else we would do, because so thanks Kimberly!) 🙂

Fill the washer with hot water a second time, also on the “clean cycle” setting (or the hottest, highest setting).

Add 2 cups of bleach to the detergent dispenser to remove stains and germs that may be hiding in the tub. Again, let the machine go through a full wash and rinse cycle.

Step 3 – Run an Extra Rinse Cycle

If all stains have been removed, run an additional cycle without adding anything to the water. This will completely remove any remaining residue.

Step 4 – Clean Detergent Tray

Remove the bleach compartment, fabric softener compartment and all other removable parts from the detergent drawer of the washing machine.

Fill the bucket with lukewarm water and a few drops of soap. Drop the pieces from the detergent tray into the bucket and let them soak for a few minutes.

After a few minutes of soaking, take the rags out of the bucket and wipe them with a sponge or rag. Dry the parts and return them to their original position in your detergent drawer.

If it needs cleaning, which is possible, mix 1 cup of liquid bleach and 1 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dampen a clean cloth with the bleach solution, then wipe the gasket with a damp cloth.

Finally, use a damp cloth or all-purpose cleaner to wipe down the outside of the machine so it’s as clean on the outside as it is on the inside!

Just follow the 5 steps above and your front loader will be pyramid again! And remember, this is a process you need to do regularly – at least once a month.

Daily care for your front-loading washer

In addition to a monthly deep cleaning, there are a few daily steps you can take to keep your washing machine clean for the long term. Do the following each time you use the washing machine:

  1. After completing a wash cycle, remove the clothes from the washing machine as soon as possible.
  2. Open the washing machine door so that the door and drum dry out between uses.
  3. Wipe the rubber seal and drum with a rag or paper towel.
  4. Pull out the detergent drawer to dry.

These simple steps will keep your washing machine running efficiently and your clothes smelling great!
