Multi-read content what to do when friends dog dies

MaxBoxerspent this summer with cancer, and ButtercupPugdied last month of a blood disease. Both are beloved dogs of dear friends. I told pet parents I’m sorry for their loss, but now I realize I didn’t do enough. With that in mind, I’ve put together the following five ways to show you care about the death of a friend’s dog.

A dog in golden sunshine. Woman and Westie. Photographed by Shutterstock.

1. Send a card, but not just any card

Skip the card aisle at your grocery store and tap Etsy instead to manually show empathy. I love thisscalable mapcome fromRecycling ideasShop. It features forget-me-not flower seeds embedded in paper capsules on the front, with growing instructions provided on the back.

Store – run by Washingtonians Holly, Alasdair and two of themNew picture- will even personalize the card with the dog’s name or a special message at no extra cost. In the spring, your friend can peel the dog shape and plant it in memory of the animal to enjoy the beautiful blue flowers for years to come.

2. Have the trolley delivered

The right gift basket can also show your friends how much you care.green pet giftspecializes in baskets filled with healthy, eco-friendly produce sourced locally in Oregon.

theDeluxe Pet Gift Baskethave supplies to comfort pet parents during emotionally difficult times. Among the items in the basket were a Tibetan pet prayer flag, a soy wax memorial candle, a wooden picture frame with the words “Footprints in Heaven, Footprints on My Heart” and a box of Jasmine tea. Pearl Leaves Leaves Pleasant.

3. Give a small gift

A small token representing the dead dog is a nice gesture. I love itPatronus pincome fromCloud K9. Plated in antique pewter and handcrafted to order, it may become a favorite piece of jewelry for friends because of the memories it evokes. The company produces angel pins for over 40 dog breeds.

4. Donate

Many animal organizations make it easy to raise funds in memory of a beloved pet. For example,American Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animalsaccept online donations in the form ofeMemorial. Simply contribute an amount by credit card, check or PayPal and the ASPCA will send a commemorative card to your friend in recognition of the gift.

theHumane Society of the United Statesalso accept online memorial donations in the form ofGifts from kindred spirits. Your friend will receive a commemorative card and the dog’s name will be added to the HSUH Book of Kind Spirits, located at the organization’s operations center in Maryland.

5. Schedule play dates with other pets

You don’t have to spend money to show how much you care about the loss of your friend. If the dog is left behind by a sibling, involve the puppy in fun activities with your pet. Whether you’re going to the park or just to one of your backyards, your friend and a grieving sibling will appreciate the gesture. Without Sampson in two states, Spot, Dolly, and I would pay direct homage and bring solace with a bit of playtime.

Few will ever love you as unconditionally as your pet does. So when you lose them, it’s can be hard to move on. Here is some help.

Step 1: Allow yourself to grieve

Don’t be embarrassed that you’re so upset. Your pet was a big part of your life. Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty or silly for grieving.

Step 2: Memorialize your pet

Have a memorial that celebrates your pet’s life, whether it’s gathering loved ones to reminisce, or planting something in your yard that will serve as a tribute.

Tip

Making an annual donation to a pet charity or local shelter on the anniversary of your pet’s death both honors your pet and helps other animals.

Step 3: Pick up the pieces

As you are grieving, give away, throw away, or put away your pet’s bowl, toys, brushes, bedding, and other items they used daily. Keeping a few keepsakes is OK, but you don’t want to flood yourself with daily reminders.

Step 4: Don’t replace them right away

Resist the temptation to get another pet right away. You don’t want to bring an animal into your home when you’re feeling despondent. When you’re ready, you’ll know, but a good rule of thumb is to wait at least six months.

Step 5: Be patient

Be patient. Know that it’s going to take time before you feel good again.

Did You Know?

Six months after the death of a pet, 35 percent of pet owners are still grieving, and 22 percent are still struggling with the loss a year later.

Why does losing a dog feel like losing a family member? The way we attach to dogs is similar to the way we attach to humans. The challenge is to mourn the loss of a dog the same way we mourn the loss of a human. I try to do that here by remembering Mwaji.
