HISTORY OF THE PRESSURE FREQUENCY VALVE

The pressure relief valve (safety pressure relief valve) is designed to open at a preset pressure and discharge liquid until the pressure drops to an acceptable level. The development of safety valves has an interesting history.

It is widely believed that Denis Papin invented the first regulator (circa 1679) to prevent overpressure from his steam-powered “decomposition device”. His decompression design consisted of a weight suspended from a swing arm. When the force of the steam pressure exerted on the valve exceeds the force of the weight acting on the lever, the valve opens. Designs that require a higher drop pressure setting require a longer swingarm and/or greater weight. This simple system works but requires more space and it can be easily manipulated, which can lead to power surges and fires. Another disadvantage is that the valve will open prematurely if the unit is subjected to a kickback motion.

Direct-acting pressure relief valve: Later, to avoid the disadvantages of the lever arrangement, direct-acting pressure relief valves were fitted to early steam locomotives. In this design, the weight is placed directly on top of the valve mechanism. To keep weight sizes within a reasonable range, valve sizes are often set below size, resulting in a smaller vent opening than necessary. Typically, an explosion occurs when the steam pressure builds faster than the vent can release the excess pressure. Bouncing movements also release pressure quickly.

Direct-acting spring valves: Timothy Hackworth is credited with being the first to use a direct-acting spring valve (circa 1828) on his locomotive engine called Royal George. Timothy used an accordion arrangement of leaf springs, later replaced by coil springs, to exert force on the valve. The spring force can be adjusted by adjusting the leaf spring retaining nuts.

Pressure Relief Valves

Improvements to the design of the direct-acting spring-loaded pressure relief valve continued over the following years to accommodate the widespread use of boilers for heating and powering locomotives and boats on the river and the pump. Boilers are less common these days, but the safety valve continues to be an important element, in systems with pressure vessels, for protection against damage or serious failure.

Each application has unique requirements, but before we begin the selection process, let’s review the operating principles of a typical direct-acting pressure relief valve.

WORKING PRESSURE PRESSURE VALVES

The pressure relief valve consists of three functional elements:

  1. ) Valve element, usually a spring-loaded poppet valve.
  2. ) Sensing element, usually a diaphragm or a piston.
  3. ) Reference force element. Most often a source.
  4.  

During operation, the pressure relief valve remains normally closed until the upstream pressure reaches the desired set pressure. The valve opens when the set pressure is reached and continues to open further, allowing more flow when the pressure increases excessively. When the upstream pressure drops a few psi below the set pressure, the valve closes.

(1) VALVE ELEMENT (valve plug)

Most commonly, pressure relief valves use a spring-loaded “poppet” valve as the valve element. The poppet consists of an elastomeric seal, or in some high-pressure designs, a thermoplastic seal, configured to act as a seal on the valve seat. During operation, the spring and the upstream pressure act on the valve. When the force of the upstream pressure exerts a force greater than the force of the spring, the seal will then move away from the valve seat allowing fluid to pass through the outlet. When the upstream pressure drops below the set point, the valve closes.

(2) DETECTION ELEMENT (piston or diaphragm)

Plunger designs are often used when higher relief pressures are required, when ruggedness is an issue, or when relief pressure must not be held within tight tolerances. Piston designs tend to run slower than diaphragm designs due to piston seal friction. In low pressure applications, or where high accuracy is required, the diaphragm type is preferred. Diaphragm pressure relief valves use a thin disc-shaped element that is used to sense changes in pressure. They are usually made of elastomers, however, thin complex metals are used in special applications. The diaphragm essentially eliminates the friction inherent in the piston-type design. Additionally, for a particular wastegate size, it is often possible to provide a larger sensing area with a diaphragm design than is possible with a piston design.

(3) FORCE REFERENCES (Spring)

The reference force element is usually a mechanical spring. This spring applies a force to the sensing element and closes the valve. Many pressure relief valves are designed with a regulator that allows the user to adjust the reduced pressure setpoint by varying the force exerted by the reference spring.

Throughput requirements
What is the maximum throughput required by the application? How much does the flow change? Port configuration and efficient outputs are also important considerations.

Liquid used (gas, liquid, toxic or flammable)

The chemical properties of the liquid should be considered before determining the best material for your application. Each liquid will have its own unique characteristics, so care must be taken to select the correct body and seal material that will come in contact with the liquid. The parts of the pressure relief valve that come into contact with the liquid are called the “wetting” parts. If the liquid is flammable or dangerous, the pressure relief valve must be able to discharge it safely.

Cut

In many high-tech applications, space is limited and weight is a factor. Several manufacturers specialize in miniature components and you should consult. Material selection, especially pressure relief valve body components, will affect weight. Also consider door sizes (thread), adjustment styles and mounting options, as these will affect dimensions and weight.

Equipment
A wide variety of materials are available to handle different fluids and operating environments. Common materials of construction for pressure relief valves include brass, plastic, and aluminum. Various grades of stainless steel (such as 303, 304 and 316) are also available. The springs used inside the wastegate are usually music wire (carbon steel) or stainless steel.

Brass is suitable for most common applications and is often economical. Aluminum is usually specified when considering weight. Plastics are considered when low cost is the primary concern or a disposable item is required. Stainless steel is often chosen for use with corrosive fluids, where fluid cleanliness is a consideration, or where operating temperatures are high.

Equally important is the compatibility of the seal material with the fluid and with the operating temperature range. Buna-N is a typical sealant. Optional seals are offered by several manufacturers and they include: Fluorocarbon, EPDM, Silicone and Perfluoroelastomer.

Temperature
Materials selected for pressure relief valves must not only be compatible with the fluid, but also be able to perform well at expected operating temperatures. The primary concern is whether the chosen elastomer will perform well in the expected temperature range. Additionally, operating temperature can affect flow capacity and/or spring rate in severe applications.
