9 Tips for Cleaning Kitchen Cabinets

Photo: istockphoto.com

You probably spend most of your kitchen cleaning time focusing on the three big parts – the sink, the counter and the floor – but your cabinets also need regular attention, especially the doors. This is where cooking grease droplets, food splatters and small steam tend to settle and then attract and trap dust, resulting in dirty, dull or streaky surfaces.

Luckily, although a little tedious, cleaning kitchen cabinets isn’t difficult, nor does it leave behind potentially harmful odors or chemicals. Whether your cabinets are painted or finished in wood, they’ll fit some common household items and a little elbow grease. Just be careful not to spoil their ending with too hasty an approach. Here’s how to do the job right.

USE a mild detergent solution.

Let harsh cleaners and scrub brushes get into your sink; Vigorous scrubbing can damage the paint or finish of kitchen cabinets. Instead, make your own gentle cleanser by mixingone part mild dish soapwith two parts hot water, or the same ratio of distilled white vinegar to hot water. (Hot water helps soften stains and grease so you can clean them up easier.) Pour the cleaning mixture into a spray bottle and you’re good to go.

DO NOT soak your cabinets.

Spray the cleaning mixture onto a microfiber cloth or soft cloth until damp but not soaked. Too much moisture can damage the cabinet’s paint or finish. Now wipe down each cabinet door from top to bottom, paying particular attention to any trim or molding where dust and dirt tend to collect. Don’t forget to wipe down the handles and knobs, as well as the inside of the cabinet doors. Sprinkle more detergent on the fabric as needed, but never wet the fabric enough so that it doesn’t drip. Pour the excess down the sink if necessary.

Treat strained spots with an old toothbrush.

Some cabinets have ornate cutouts or deep grooves that a rag cannot reach. In these cases, soak the old toothbrush in the cleaning solution andUse a toothbrushto gently scrub hard-to-reach places. Don’t forget the areas around cabinet handles or knobs and the edges of cabinet doors, where it may be difficult to reach with a rag.

DO NOT allow water to enter the hinge.

Although your cleaner is safe for painted or finished wood, as well as laminate, it is not intended for your cabinet hinges. You don’t want time spent cleaning kitchen cabinets to leave you with rusty hardware. Instead, use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe dust and dirt from the metal. If there are stains or if they are particularly greasy, simply spray a drop or two of cleaning solution on your fabric, rub the stain, then dry the metal.

REMOVE detergent with a final rinse.

After cleaning your cabinets, wipe them down again with a clean cloth lightly dampened with warm water. This will remove any remaining cleaning solution or dirt. As with your cleaner, it’s best to work from the top down to avoid leaving water droplets behind.

DRY cabinet after cleaning.

Allowing the cabinet to air dry after cleaning may damage or bubble the paint or finish. Instead, use a soft cloth to dry any wet surfaces and promote shine.

DON’T FORGET the glass.

If your cabinets have clear glass, spray a clean cloth with a mixture of vinegar or commercial glass cleaner and wipe the glass thoroughly on both sides. In general, it’s fairly easy to remove dry food debris, grease, and other kitchen stains from glass, but you may need to treat the stain twice for complete removal.Do not use anything abrasive for the glassand dry the panels after you finish cleaning them.

Treat stubborn stains with baking soda.

If stains, dry spots, or grease remain on your cabinets even after you’ve finished cleaning them, you’ll need to take an extra step. In a small bowl, mixone part baking sodawith two parts water. Use a clean, dry cloth to dab the mixture onto the stains. Let the mixture soak for a few minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth, rubbing gently until the stain disappears. Wipe the area again with a damp cloth, then dry with a microfiber cloth or soft cloth.

DO NOT skip the periodic deep cleaning step.

At least twice a year, go the extra mile to clean kitchen cabinets.area. Thoroughly clean your cabinets, then wipe down shelves, drawer interiors, and interior and exterior surfaces of cabinets, using the same cleaning supplies and procedures described above. Before putting items back in the closet, ask yourself if they are worth keeping.Throw away or donate anything you no longer need or use, and get rid of badly chipped dishes, cracked cups, plastic containers without lids and other unnecessary things that tend to accumulate in the deepest recesses of kitchen cabinets.

Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to clean kitchen cabinets! House cleaning just got easier with these helpful hints for getting the job done faster. Instead of wiping down all cabinets regularly, just spot clean. Spray multi-purpose cleaner on a micro-fiber cloth. With this, you can quickly wipe away fingerprints and splatters on the kitchen cabinets you use most often. Make sure to wipe the hardware, too. Cleaning kitchen cabinets entirely should happen once a season, including emptying them out. Use a micro-fiber cloth and mild cleanser for the shelves, inside of the doors, and outside of the doors. For crevices, like in many kinds of house cleaning, use a toothbrush. To clean painted kitchen cabinets, use a baking soda and water paste mixture to tackle stains. Wood kitchen cabinets need oil soap to clean and add shine. These house cleaning tips can keep your kitchen cabinets looking like new year-round!
