Multi-read content how to make a hand sanitizer spray

So we are like a month in this very special moment of our lives. Things are slowly settling into a new normal (at least they are for us). I (usually) don’t stay up until 3 a.m. and start cleaning the house again, which is fine. But some things are still weird – and finding hand sanitizer is one of those oddities. Remember when we used to go buy it in giant vases and little keychain-sized boxes like that, ahh, toilet paper or something? Yes, those days are over. So I’m going to show you how to make homemade hand sanitizer.

how to make hand sanitizer

before starting

Alright, guys. Let’s clear up a few things before my comment/email/social DM gets hit with messages from Karens telling me I’m doing this all wrong. This is not a substitute for medical care or advice. It’s as scientific and as sterile as it would be at home, outside of the lab.

  • HAND HYGIENE IS NOT HANDLING.
  • I have
  • always
  • preached that. If you have access to a sink and soap, use that first – it’s better for your hands and provides better protection. That said, it’s not always practical (like if you’re a cashier, you can’t go out and wash your hands after every transaction) or it can (unless you have a sink in your car) to wash your hands . It is the use of hand sanitizer.
  • Alcohol content MUST be 60% or higher to be effective
  • . I would aim a little higher – If you use the percentages and percentages I use, your alcohol percentage will be 75%. Because we add other things, the higher the alcohol percentage, the better. If you start with anything below 60%, you can’t end up with an end product with an alcohol percentage above 60% (I think that’s obvious, but I had a very long and controversial with someone I consider very intelligent and scientifically thinking about it.)
  • When it comes to alcohol, it can be difficult to find and buy rubbing alcohol right away.
  • . If so, look for a drink that’s around 140 degrees (at least), which converts to 70% alcohol. If you can find Everclear, the highest strength is 190 (which is 95% alcohol!) which means that even though it’s more expensive than rubbing alcohol, you can stretch it even further by diluting it to 75%.
  • I ONLY use essential oils for fragrance
  • . I love essential oils in general because of their fragrance. I make no health claims about essential oils. I love you guys, but I’m not interested in other essential oils. I realize you might think my “pharmaceutical oils” are trash and I’m trash when I use them. It’s okay, I’m such trash. I became a DoTerra Consultant by accident once (that’s another story for another day), I don’t need to do it again.
  • I based this recipe on
  • WHO (World Health Organization
  • ) Recommendations. I consider this to be a good scientific source. If you disagree, that’s fine…but we’re not going to discuss that here.
  • This is very flammable. Make sure your hands are dry and alcohol-free before lighting matches, grilling, etc.

The description

How to make homemade hand sanitizer according to WHO recommendations.

Ingredient

Report
1 timeDouble3x

twelfthfluid ounce of cleaning alcohol 91%*
2 teaspoonsemollient (glycerin, fractionated coconut oil, or other skin-friendly nut or seed oils)
1 tbsp3% hydrogen peroxide
1 tbsp + 2 teaspoonsdistilled or boiled water
Optional: A few drops of essential oil per bottle

Tutorial

In a very clean glass stopper, add alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and distilled water (see alternative measures below). Add fabric softener and shake vigorously until combined. Pour into a small spray bottle and label. If desired, add a few drops of essential oil to each bottle. You may need to shake the mixture between toppings.

To note

99% alcohol: 12 ounces alcohol 1/4 cup 2 tablespoons water
95% alcohol (Everclear): 12 ounces alcohol 1/4 cup 1 1/2 tablespoons water
91% alcohol: see recipe above
70% alcohol: 12 ounces alcohol 1 1/2 tablespoons water
Anything less than 70%: do not use

Basically, for every 8% alcohol below 99%, remove 1 tablespoon of water. Thank you SO MUCH to my very smart son Clark who helped me with math.

What do you need

  • Alcohol at 70% or more (ethyl or isopropyl alcohol or alcohol at 140 degrees or more)
  • Distilled water
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • Emollients (glycerin, fractionated coconut oil, grapefruit seed oil, jojoba oil; any oil you would use as a moisturizer on your skin.)
  • Small vaporizer. I had mine at the Hobby Lobby before it closed; As far as I know, Michael’s does curbside service in most places. You can also use an empty travel sized spray bottle, just rinse first and label then.
  • Optional: essential oils, longan

When buying or rounding up supplies, pay attention to percentages – they are important here (talking about supplies, in the middle of the section onglycerineandalways clear, I feel a very strong musical atmosphere of the 90s here. I bet before you heard “Glycerin” and Everclear, you never imagined that the most exciting thing you would do in 2020 would be making homemade hand sanitizer.) 70% alcohol or higher , 3% hydrogen peroxide, distilled or purified water.

You’ll also need small spray bottles and labels (even if you just put the Sharpie label on them. But Safety 101 – never leave a spray bottle without a label.)

Place the alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and distilled water in a clean glass jar with a lid. I’ve included alternate measurements for common alcohol percentages in the recipe above, but basically for every 8% alcohol below 99% throw in 1 tbsp of water (my son very clever). I’m Clark, 15, much smarter than me now, helped me figure this out). Add fabric softener and shake vigorously until combined – it may be cloudy. Its good.

If desired, add a few drops of essential oil to each bottle. You may need to shake the mixture between loads to make sure the fabric softener doesn’t get stuck in a bottle. Shake well before use, then release into hands and rub together, or spray onto paper towels or paper towels and wipe down hard surfaces (phones, car door handles, steering wheels, shopping carts, etc.)
