Multi-read content how to make a bed with a duvet

Are you ready for Bed 101? I show you how to stack a bed step by step to create a stylish and comfortable hotel bed!

Just as I’m often asked about all the “delicious treats” (pillow throws, lighting, etc.) Everything from the comforter you need to buy to the best pillows and sheets – all the things that form the basis of a good night’s sleep. sleep ! So today I am going to share 101 bed tutorials where I show you exactly how to make a bed starting from the bare mattress to the last pillow. Let’s go…(post includes affiliate links; full disclosure statement is available {here})

LOVE this bed making 101 post! So helpful in choosing the right duvet, sheets, pillows, and other bedding!

1. Mattress protection sheet against termites and dust mites

Placing your bed starts with a quality mattress protector – that’s KEY! Over years of use, mattresses can actually gain weight due to the buildup of dead skin cells, sweat, and dust mites. I know… it’s disgusting! Start by covering your ceiling tiles withdust mite mattress / spring guards like {this}Where{this}Cover the entire mattress (top and bottom) and zip at the end:

Great recommendation for protecting your mattress from dust mites!

Look for one that fits the height of your mattress (The Store Company offers them in 3 sizes – 9″, 12″ and 16″) instead of buying a “one size fits all” protector for the best fit. you buy a new mattress, put on a mattress protector from day one to prolong its life.If you have an older, unused mattress protector, it’s not too late – just give your mattress a good overall suction and put on a mattress protector to protect it from now on.

2. Waterproof mattress topper

You also want to protect your mattress from spills and accidents and have a layer that is easier to remove and wash than a mattress protector. So the next step is to add a waterproof pad such as{this soft waterproof foam mattress}. The “quiet” part is key as I’ve had waterproof pads in the past with the plastic crinkling when moving around in bed, definitely not what you want for a good night’s sleep. ! A good mattress also has extra padding:

Great recommendations for the exact products to cover and protect your mattress with!

If your mattress is not as soft as you would like, consider adding some morefoam mattress topper like a {the}. They can make a BIG difference to the comfort of your bed! I have it on several beds in our house but not on our guest bed as it is a plush mattress and quite soft.

3. Leaves

The next layer is your flat sheets and fitted sheets. In my opinion, the “best” sheets are organic cotton sheets but since they are quite expensive we only have them on the main bed and we use other sheets for other uses of the rest of the bed in the house. Here are 101 of the three main sheet types so you can choose the one that’s best for you and your budget:

cotton sheet

The advantage of cotton sheets is that they are durable and breathable (good if you get “hot”) while the biggest downside is that they tend to wrinkle a bit more than some other sheets. Options include 100% cotton or cotton blended with materials like linen or bamboo. I currently have{this bamboo/cotton bedding set}on our guest beds and we really love them! I usually lay the sheet flat on the bed with the finished side down and fold it from the top about 8 inches over a comforter or tablecloth:

Great post with advice about the best sheets for your bed!

Love seeing how she layers the sheet, coverlet, and duvet in this bed making 101 post!

Organic cotton sheets

Organic cotton sheets such as {these}it’s on our main bed has the same benefit

microfiber sheet

The biggest advantage of microfiber sheets is that they are inexpensive, soft, and wrinkle-free. The downside is that they are not made with natural materials and are not breathable (so not a good choice if you sweat at night or live in a hot climate) or environmentally friendly. I tried{those microfiber sheets}received amazing reviews and they are really super soft and wrinkle free.

Whichever bed sheet you choose to purchase, pay attention to the size of the bed sheet to ensure it is deep enough to fit your mattress. I also like a generously sized flat sheet so Jeff and I don’t play tug of war at night – I’m impressed{this bamboo/cotton bedding set}on our guest bed is a nice and generous width and length. Also, be careful when putting too much thread on the thread count – some manufacturers increase their thread count by using double or triple threads created by twisting 2-3 lower quality threads together, so that ‘A 500 thread count sheet from one company will not normally have the same quality as a 500 thread count sheet from another company only.

4. Pillows

It’s hard to recommend pillows because what’s best for one person isn’t for another. Jeff likes to sleep on a foam pillow shaped like{this}because he has a back problem and thinks it helps him a bit. I tried sleeping on his pillow and it wasn’t for me! I like a belly pillow like you can find{this}. The key is to find the pillow that is most comfortable for you and best suited to your sleeping style. In general, you want to choose a pillow that is soft for stomach sleepers, comfortable for back sleepers, and firm or firmer for side sleepers.

5. Protect the pillow

Just as you have to use mattress protectors, you also have to protect your pillows, especially in your living room! No one wants to sleep on a yellowed or dusty pillow from a previous customer!{These Pillow Protectors}perfect as they are zippered but still breathable so you don’t get nasty air bags or plastic creases like you do with others.

Who knew?! You should cover your pillows with a pillow protector before the pillow cover to protect from dust mites!

After applying a protective layer to the pillow, a pillowcase that matches the bed sheet is your next layer.

6. Blankets

I don’t have a blanket on our guest bed at the moment as down bedspreads and duvets are plentiful for the warmer months, but you may want to add an extra blanket in the winter depending where you live. When I have blankets on our bed, I sandwich them between the flat sheet and the comforter/blanket.{This lightweight quilt}There are many preferred color options:

The perfect lightweight yet warm and cozy blanket!

7. Duvet or tablecloth

I have a comforter or a tablecloth on every bed in our house! The main difference between the two is that the palm rests are generally lighter, but I use them pretty much interchangeably. Both work great for layering and washing your face really well. In summer, a sheet and a duvet or a tablecloth may suffice!

LOVE this basketweave coverlet! One of the bedding essentials in this bed making 101 post!

My favorite duvet is{this Belgian linen quilt}which I have in three colors. They are expensive but I have been buying them for years and they still look as good as the day I bought them. They wash well!

8. Duvet cover

I always sleep with a duvet, even in the hottest summer, it’s so cozy! In our master bedroom I sometimes put the blanket under the comforter and sometimes I put it over the comforter, but in our living room I always put the blanket/sheets first, then the comforter on top. This way guests can easily remove the cover if they don’t want that extra layer of warmth.

Gorgeous blue and white stripe duvet cover! One of the essentials in this helpful bed making 101 post!

I have this quarter-folded blanket (sometimes I quarter-fold it but this blanket is nice and generously sized) at the end of the bed:

Crushing on this blue and white striped duvet! Looks so pretty folded at the foot of a bed!

When it comes to choosing a duvet insert, I’ve written a full article on what to look for when buying one – check out my guide to finding the best duvet insert {here}.

9. Decorative cushions

And finally, the most fun part… the cushions! The formula I most often use for a queen bed is two 26″ pillows, two 20-22″ pillows and one 18-20″ pillow or lumbar pillow. But check.{this post} on how to arrange pillows on a queen bedfor more options. Here is the beautiful trio I chose for our living room:

Crushing on this trio of blue and white throw pillows! Sources are linked in post!

As always, I recommend increasing the size of your pillowcase, choosing a pillowcase 2 inches larger than the pillowcase (so a 22 inch pillowcase for a pillowcase 20 inches, etc.). I’d rather have lower quality pads for the two larger decorative pillows (or European pads if you have them) because those are what most people use as back pillows if they’re sitting in bed having read or watch television.{These pillows}These are my favorite pillows because they are beautiful, soft, and more affordable than many other down pillows. I think you should buy the more expensive small pillows because these pillows are mainly there to look good and not be used!

And with that, you’ve created a beautiful, cozy bed that will give you a great night’s sleep!

This bed making 101 is SO helpful! All the details on each layer to put on your bed from the mattress protector on up!
