Multi-read content how to use a ramset

About three years ago, while on a break from work, I volunteered to help my son build a bedroom in his previously unfinished basement. We place the 2X4 pressure treated sleepers on the concrete floor and on the concrete block wall. We laid plywood on the floor, covered it with laminate flooring, insulated it, and fabricated drywall for the walls. By far, the biggest difficulty of the whole project (aside from just hanging everything out there) was securing the crosspieces to the floor and walls. We used a Tapcon hammer and screw drill, which are durable but labor intensive. Faced with another project that required a bit of wood-concrete assembly and remembering that we hadn’t had much fun on previous jobs, I thought it was time to come up with a new plan. After doing some research I decided to invest in a Ramset MasterShot powder activated nail gun.

theRamset MasterShot.22 caliber powder activator designed to bond quickly and easily to concrete and steel. MasterShot is capable of driving ½” to 3″ long nails into steel, wood and concrete. The “powder activated” end of the equation takes the form of single shot .22 caliber powder charges. There are three levels of “flour powder” to choose from, depending on the length of the nail you are using and the material you are shooting. Charges are color coded: 2 (brown), 3 (green), and 4 (yellow), with higher numbers being stronger. Here’s a quick look at the Home Depot Ramset MasterShot:

Gunpowder and Tridents – What Could Go Wrong? !

Sometimes we joke a little about exaggerated PRECAUTIONS!! and CAUTION!! comes with almost every tool these days. Here’s a tool that might be worth reading, assuming you don’t want to end up with one of this year’s tools.Darwin Prize. A tool that can drive a 3″ nail through qualified steel and concrete is an exception to the “We don’t need zero stink!” line of thought. To me, anyway.

ramset mastershotYes, I sometimes read instructions…

The tool itself is quite solid. It weighs just under 4 ½ pounds, has comfortable grips and a heavy barrel. Ramset MasterShot is simple to use. To fire a nail (also known as a pin), you simply insert the nail into the top of the barrel. Nails come with an orange plastic pad around the handle, keeping them centered in the barrel. Slide the chamber open, insert the cartridge into the barrel lock and close the chamber. Firmly press the end of the barrel into your part, pull the trigger and BOOM – part A is now attached to part B! After firing, quickly open the compartment and the spent cartridge will fly out.

ramset mastershotTo load Ramset MasterShot, first insert a nail into the barrel…

ramset mastershotSlide open chamber…

ramset mastershotInsert the price of your choice…

ramset mastershotAnd shut your ass. Lock and load!

The following Ramset video, which appears to be an insider clip, gives you an idea of how the gun works.

The Ramset MasterShot: say hello my little friend!

I’m currently doing quite a bit of renovation work on a three-story duplex. It was an old building, and the exterior walls were solid brick, about 10 inches thick, and the interior was plastered over. Concrete floors and ceilings, as well as some interior walls. This bloodsucker is STRONG! And really great, except when you’re trying to do certain things, like run wiring or plumbing, or fix decorations or install cabinets, or…really ANYTHING.

We have a number of jobs that require putting wood in concrete. Concrete floors have sleepers on top, with different floor coverings on them. In the kitchen there is a plywood subfloor with vinyl flooring. Apparently there have been long-term leaks in the past, as parts of the subfloor – and the sleepers underneath – completely rotted away.

ramset mastershotThe sleepers and gangways need a bit of attention…

After uprooting the rotten wood and drying out the area, we cut and placed new 5/4″ pressure treated sleepers. I bought 2 ½” nails to hold them in place. Putting on my goggles and hearing protection, I loaded my gun barrel, hooked it to the crossbeams, and sped off.

ramset mastershotReady to attach a crossbeam

Sorry. As I mentioned, the Ramset MasterShot can fire any of three powder payloads, with the yellow payload being the strongest. Of course, I bought a yellow box; More power is better, right? Well, obviously not always. Thanks to a combination of more force and, apparently, less dense concrete in the target area, the nail completely penetrated the sleeper and buried itself in the concrete. At the risk of sounding like a coloring book, I returned to the Orange department store for the green and brown boxes. It turned out that the green filler was used and we attached the crosspieces quickly and easily.

ramset mastershotThe yellow payload is a bit too strong for this job.

ramset mastershotLuckily, the brown and green fillers take it down a notch.

Too much or too little penetration is a fairly common phenomenon, judging by comments made on various forums and other reviews. The concrete in some walls and floors can be much harder and denser than others. The other material you are pulling through will also affect penetration, depending on how wet or dry it is, if there are any knots, etc. You’ll probably have to experiment with different loads until you find the one that works best for your pins without overloading them.

I’ve had a few that end up sticking out ¼” to ½” or so, and those are pretty easy to finish with a hammer. I’ve had a few others stuck for over an inch. I’ve had enough success completing them using the second lightest (brown) load. I refilled the cartridge – DO NOT insert a new nail into the barrel – and placed the barrel over the protruding nail. It works quite effectively to regrow the nail, or very close to it. Again, testing may be required.

After completing the floor replacement and putting a new layer of vinyl on top, we had to reinstall some of our kitchen cabinets. The Ramset MasterShot and some 2 ½” pins secured the base cabinet to the wall very quickly. Since we weren’t sure about the shear strength of the pins, we decided to use a different method for wall mounting We’ve used this tool to mount new baseboards and surface mount some electrical boxes and junction boxes.

ramset mastershotAssembly of the base cabinets is quick and easy.

ramset mastershotPerfect discharge. You can finish driving in the dowels with a hammer if needed.

Other ways to nail

In the world of powder activated tools, there are many typesoption. On a tight budget? Yeshammer patternfor about $26 can handle nails up to 2 ½” long. For fifty dollars you can upgrade to amodellooks like the hammer model, but has a trigger. Next on the list is the gun I bought,Ramset MasterShot. All use .22 caliber payloads and the heaviest can drive nails up to 3 inches long. They can also fire nails as short as ½” and come in a variety of sizes, including nails with washers for added holding power.

ramset mastershotThe fancy case is not included…

If you are building a skyscraper or a bomb shelter and need to do some serious heavy work, you can upgrade to the .25 or .27 caliber models. Many of them are “semi-automatic”, meaning they take strips of ten nails, rather than having to hammer in just one nail for each shot. Some can also pull threaded studs. Prices range from a few hundred dollars or more.

ramset mastershotCushion nails provide more options for holding your “stuff” together.

Ramset MasterShot did a great job on our project. It seems very sturdy and we didn’t experience any burns or hiccups while using it. When we overdid it several times, the piston that drives the inlet studs actually protruded from the end of the barrel – and stayed there. After muttering a few harsh and unfortunate words, I dug into the manual again (twice for a tool – a new record!) Fortunately, I found there was an easy fix. They recommend tapping the piston with a soft nose hammer, but I found a short 2X4 does the trick.

ramset mastershotMuch faster – and more fun – than messing around. With Tapcons.

This tool is very safe, if you use it correctly. It will not burn unless the chamber is closed and the barrel tip is pressed firmly against the work piece. It’s relatively quiet, for something that could cause a powder charge, but I’d still recommend hearing protection. It has already saved us a lot of time and effort, and we still have a lot of work to do on the second floor and in the basement. It’s affordable and readily available, both online and at most home improvement stores. If your job is to fasten wood to concrete or steel on a daily basis, you’ll probably want a faster, more powerful tool, perhaps one of the .27 caliber models. For the serious DIYer or someone who occasionally slips into their pocket to do jobs like this, the Ramset MasterShot will make your job a whole lot less tedious.

This tool is used most often to attach wood to concrete or wood to steel but it can be used with other materials. There are many fasteners of various sizes and shapes. Check out the store display to see more. By the way, if you are curious as to the holding strength, good luck getting these nails out of concrete, it’s possible but man it’s not easy! These are permanent fasteners. Easier to grind it off than pull it out.
