Clean the fridge

The connection is soldered
1/4 in. copper pipes connected to existing cold water pipes.

The biggest challenge when running the water line in the refrigerator is touching the cold water line and running 1/4 inch. O.D. (outer diameter) flexible copper tubing. An ice maker installation kit can be purchased at home centers and some hardware stores, but we do not recommend it. Most have saddle valves (do not meet plumbing codes in some areas) and some have plastic pipes (which can dry out, split and leak over time). We recommend using additional fixed valves and copper tubing for better water flow and reduced risk of leaks, which can cause widespread damage.

To get started, locate the nearest cold water source to the refrigerator, whether it’s under the sink, under the floor, on the wall, or even on the ceiling. In this kitchen, we ran the new water line from the refrigerator under the sink through the cabinets. (To note:We’ve removed the drain pipes to show this project clearly.) Be sure to keep the pipes above storage areas and behind drawers if possible to avoid damaging the pipes. If you must drill into a floor or wall, first check for air ducts, wiring, plumbing, or other possible obstructions. Next, calculate the number of feet 1/4 inch. D.O. flexible copper tubing you need for your refrigerator water lines. Figure 6 to 8 feet of the extra coil at the back of the refrigerator so you can remove it for cleaning and maintenance.

Then decide if you will use one of the three refrigerator water line connection options: a conventional welded tee, a compression tee, or a saddle valve. Plumbers recommend removing a portion of the chilled water line to weld it to the usual 1/2 inch diameter. copper tee. If you have CPVC (plastic) or steel pipes, add tees made of the same material. If you don’t want to solder, you can cut the copper plumbing and install a 5/8″ outside diameter. compression bars instead (don’t use them inside walls as it’s dangerous and the plumbing code doesn’t allow it). Add pipe compound to threads for easy tightening of compression joints.

The least reliable option is a saddle valve rated for 1/2-in. copper pipe. It has a small shut-off valve that uses a pointed metal rod to pierce the outer wall of the pipe when screwed on. Then you pull the stick back and the water flows through a small hole in the tube. Some installers say the saddle valve works, but most refrigerator manufacturers recommend drilling a hole in the pipe for better flow rather than using the valve to drill the hole, then attach the saddle valve (see the owner’s manual).

To start, turn off the water at the main valve, then open the sink faucet and another faucet on the lower level to drain the water in the pipe. Next, cut a small piece of cold water pipe and solder it to a copper tee. Cut 3 to 4 in. a piece of copper pipe and solder it to the tee under the sink, then solder a water shutoff valve to the other end. Once the assembly has cooled, close the new valve and turn on the main water supply to check the tightness of the connections.

Then run a pipe through all the drawers (avoid sharp bends which can twist the pipe) and drill out 1/2″. holes as needed between cabinets. To straighten the coil (not the entire coil), have a partner hold the end of the coil flat on the ground, then push the coil down toward the ground as you roll to the length you need to go through the drawers. Now pull the tube back, starting from the fridge so that the roll is still there.

Then attach the 1/4-in. refrigerator water line to shut-off valve with compression seal. Then attach the pipe to the back of the cabinet every 2 to 4 feet. Use 1/4 in. nylon cord/cable tie. When you are outside the last drawer, do not attach any clamps; Just run the hose down to the floor near the refrigerator water line. But please attach the tube to the refrigerator.

Remember to flush the hose by putting a fresh liter of water through the line into a bucket before attaching it to the fridge. To attach the hose to the refrigerator, follow the owner’s instructions.

Usually, compression fittings come with the refrigerator. Before cutting the tubing to its final length, make sure you have a 6-8 foot reel coil that will still be rolled up and stored behind the refrigerator when you put it back in place.

Be sure to cut off the end of the square. Then slide the compression fittings on, lubricate the threads of the refrigerator fitting with pipe dope and screw on the pipe. Important: Tighten the fitting by hand, then tighten 3/4 turn with a small wrench on each side of the fitting. Once attached, open the new shutoff valve and check all refrigerator plumbing for leaks.

How do you connect PEX water line to refrigerator?

How do you fix a plastic tube line on a refrigerator?

How do you hook up a refrigerator water filter line?

How do I hook up the water line to my Frigidaire refrigerator?

Can I use plastic tubing for ice maker?

Answer: You’re right to be concerned, because plastic tubing to an ice maker is susceptible to cracking and splitting. The constant flow of hot air from the compressor fan in the essentially unventilated space behind the fridge blows over and around the tubing — and eventually makes it quite brittle.

How do I tap my PEX for ice maker?

First you need to cut the PEX tubing at the access spot. That can be done with a PEX tubing cutter. Then you acquire the correct type fitting (your size requirement may differ from picture) to rejoin the cut PEX with “T” fitting and a branch connection for an added PEX tubing to go off toward the ice maker.

Can a refrigerator water line be repaired?

If you need to fix a refrigerator water line leak in copper tubing, the steps are basically the same as repairing a plastic water line. Identify the damaged length of line, remove it with a tubing cutter, and replace it with copper tubing secured with brass unions at each end of the fix.

How does water dispenser work on refrigerator?

How do you replace a refrigerator water line?

How do you hook up a water filter?

Can I use my refrigerator without the water filter?

Does a refrigerator work without a water filter? Yes, as long as the bypass plug is installed. The plug replaces the water filter in the water filter housing. Essentially, it blocks the water from entering where the filter should be.

Can a fridge make ice without a water line?

You don’t need to hook it up if you don’t want ice and water, the fridge will work fine without it.

Why is my Frigidaire refrigerator not dispensing water?

Make sure the water filter is positioned properly – simply remove and re-install the water filter to double check. The water filter may be clogged or overdue for replacement. If water is dispensing slowly or not at all, or your water filter is older than 6 months – it’s time to replace.

How do you put water in a side by side refrigerator?

To fill the water dispenser tank and tubing, depress the water dispenser for approximately 3 minutes to allow the reservoir to fill (located behind your meat pan in the refrigerator compartment).
