Multi-read content how to frame a shower pan

Custom tiled showers start with a well-framed shower pan base

In some cases this may not be possible, such as in the case of shower wall studs which could clog the plumbing supply and drain lines. Therefore, you may need to adjust the position of some studs on the shower wall.

After framing the shower wall studs, it is important to install a 2×6 plug between each wall stud to frame the shower base area. The 2×6 stopper should be positioned between the shower enclosure studs to create a smooth shower tray.

The 2×6 abutment serves as a form for the shower screen, as well as a nailed surface to secure the flexible shower tray membrane. The shower tray liner is sandwiched between two layers of grout to form the base of the finished shower tray.
In addition to framing the shower stall posts and 2×6 blocks, it is important when framing the shower base to have a strong and stable subfloor surface. Typically, a subfloor is created from slotted and inch-blade plywood.

Another ½ inch or ¾ inch exterior plywood should be installed over the subfloor to create a 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch thick subfloor surface.

Adding additional plywood over the subfloor material when framing the shower is even more important if the existing subfloor is already structurally compromised, which is often the case when installing drains.

Finally, it is important to include a tub cover on the outside edge of the custom ceramic shower unit. You can use a 4″ x 4″ long material or simply join 2 or 3 2″ x 4″ lengths together to form the shower screen. Make sure the tub railing is secured to the subfloor using a long screw or 16penny nail.
After the glass shower column is installed, the frame of the shower column is finished.

You can then take the next step in building your custom ceramic shower, installing the grout shower pan.

Popular questions about how to frame a shower pan

How do you frame a shower pan base?

What goes first shower pan or walls?

Whether you choose to install tile or the panel walls, drywall always goes on top of the shower pan, after the pan is set into the floor. Both tile and shower walls perform the same function, they just do so with different types of materials.

How do you rough a shower pan?

How do I build a custom shower pan?

What do you put under a shower pan?

Line the underside of the shower drain flange’s rim with latex/acrylic or silicone caulk, per manufacturer’s instructions. In some cases, plumber’s putty – a commonly used drain flange sealant – will degrade the shower pan material, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions carefully here.

Do you need to waterproof under a shower base?

Shower area – High level of risk

The floor is required to be waterproofed and drained (falls between 1:60 and 1:80), walls to be water resistant and junctions and penetrations to be waterproofed.

Does shower pan liner go behind backer board?

The wallboard must be installed 1/8 inch above the shower pan. If the shower pan is not in place, the wallboard height must be guessed, which can lead to inaccuracies and an expansion gap that is too large or too small.

Do I need cement board under shower pan?

The cement board does not need to be placed under a shower pan but you can if you want to. In most cases, shower pans are installed directly over the subfloor with a mortar bed and with the cement board edge just abutting the edge of the shower pan.

How thick should the shower pan be?

The shower pan base mortar layer thickness should be approximately ½ to 1 inch thick. Since the shower floor already has a pre-slope, just apply a base mortar layer that has an even thickness throughout the shower floor area.

Today we’ll show you how to install the shower pan. Fortunately this is waaaaaay easier than it use to be…especially if you use the Wedi Fundo Ligno. You can cut the Ligno to any size you want. They also come in pre-cut dimensions, so make sure you pick a size that fits the shower you’ll build.

Once you have the pan you’ll have to cut out the existing subfloor. If you subfloor is 3/4″ plywood you’re in for a treat. If you remove the section where the Ligno is going you’ll be able to install the pan in one day.

Add 2×4 nailers to the joists and make them 3/4″ below the the top of the joist. Apply Liquid Nail to the nailers and nail or screw them to the joists. Then apply Liquid Nail to the top of the nailer and add OSB or plywood to the joist gap. What you’re doing is creating a subfloor that’s 3/4 of an inch lower than the adjacent subfloor.

Put together the Wedi Ligno shower pan drain using Wedi’s sealant. It only needs to be hand tightened…doesn’t get any easier my friend. Mix up latex modified thin-set and back butter the Wedi Ligno shower pan. Apply the same thin-set to the subfloor and embed the Ligno shower pan into the thin-set.

BOOM, it’s that easy.
