At first glance, chipmunks are adorable. They are basically small squirrels. Chipmunks are cute little creatures that are easy to find. Although they are most commonly found in forests, chipmunks are also common in enclosures.

You can find them residing under patios or walkways, around stone walls, or especially in gardens. Although not known to cause property damage, they have been known to tunnel to a food source or for shelter.

While digging isn’t the biggest deal in the world, it can create unsightly damage in a repaired yard. Some feel that chipmunks digging in the yard can cause serious damage and even through wildlife control companies to trap and kill them.

Chipmunks can cause a bit of instability in their mining, but you don’t have to go to that extreme. There are many ways to prevent chipmunks from digging, keeping them out of your garden.

To prevent

The best way to catch brood chipmunks isprevent them from showingfrom the beginning. This is the rule of thumb for any pest problem, as it is difficult to get rid of them once they have grown successfully.

There are many basic recommendations to follow to prevent chipmunks from entering the area. The first is to place L-shaped baseboards around your foundation.

It is also important to place these baseboards around sidewalks, foundations other than houses, retaining walls and porches. This will prevent them from digging to hide in those specific areas.

Make sure any rocks or piles of wood you keep outside are clean and clear. Any plant growth that occurs in these areas should be pruned as it can provide a food source, shelter, or both for chipmunks.

You should also use a gravel border without plants to surround your house and the surrounding yard. Remember that chipmunks seek food and shelter. Removing all possible paths will force them to go elsewhere in search of these things.

You can even prevent them from digging up your bulbs by planting the bulbs under a cover with plastic netting, wire, or in bulb cages.

Look for a 2.5 x 2.5 cm mesh which should be large enough to give your plants the space they need to sprout while still being small enough to prevent chipmunks from continuing to dig.

Be sure to plant bulbs that do not attract wildlife; go with something like Allium or Daffodils. If you’re just looking for decorative plants, this can be an easy alternative to installing a light box or wiring to keep chipmunks from digging.

Another way to keep them from digging in your garden is to place a stiff mesh fabric, about ¼ inch thick, around the flowers or your garden. This will create a suitable and safe space for plants to grow while keeping the chipmunks in flight.

If you store firewood outside the house, be sure to set up some kind of perimeter to prevent them from digging under the woodpile. They can find the suitable place to live or continue to dig and earn a living under the foundation of the house.

Try to prevent shrubs from wooded areas from approaching your home. Not only will this attract chipmunks closer to your home, but it will also help them gain more access to your home through these branches.

Finally, make sure toDo not store any food outside. The most common examples are birdseed and pet food. If you must keep them outside, make sure they are stored in rat-proof containers to prevent chipmunks from getting inside.

get rid of them

Perhaps chipmunks problems are common in your garden. The previous prevention tips could have been helpful, but now the problem needs to be fixed.

There are ways to get rid of chipmunks that can help you regain control of your garden and regain some sanity in your life.

1 – Use repellents

Although there are no repellents on the market that are specially formulated to repel chipmunks, there are other methods to repel them. There is some debate as to whether or not they should be used.

This is because they are not specifically made with chipmunks, although some squirrel repellent species dictate that they will work on chipmunks just as well.

Thiram is one of the most common methods of repelling squirrels and, in some cases, chipmunks. Make sure the thiram is applied to the trunks and bark of local trees or to the shade of trees in your garden.

You can also use mothballs or leftovers and place them in the garden. This smell should be enough to deter chipmunks from wanting to dig underneath, and at least possibly keep them away from that particular part of your garden.

You can even make homemade kangaroo repellent. All you have to do is mix together 3 ounces of Epsom salt, a teaspoon of Lysol, and a gallon of water. Spray diligently around potentially affected areas to ensure maximum coverage.

The strong smell will be enough to drive chipmunks out of your garden, forcing them to seek other means of food and shelter.

It is important to know that if you are using a product containing thiram (and any other commercial product), it should only be applied to plants that are not intended for human consumption.

You may also need to reapply some after it rains, as the water can wash these repellents away.

2 – Trap and release

If you don’t want to spray your garden with rat repellent, there’s also the process of trapping and removing chipmunks. It’s an ethical way to deal with what might be a somewhat persistent creature.

Be sure to check your local municipality’s laws to see what guidelines they have for eliminating chipmunks. In some areas relocation may not be allowed, so checking before doing anything is the smartest decision.

If the trapping is correct, there are some basic tips to follow when trapping and eliminating chipmunks in your garden. First, choose a small trap surrounded by a small wire mesh so that the chipmunk cannot escape. Typical chipmunk traps are about 10 to 20 inches long, which is well worth the price.

Place your traps in areas that you know are most frequented by chipmunks. Place them near caves and roads, although the former can be a little harder to find. The best spots will usually be covered since chipmunks don’t like exposed areas very much.

Prime your trap by placing the bait on the back of the trap. This means chipmunks won’t be able to just grab the bait and run away. In particular, put peanut butter near the stork’s plate; This appears to be the most effective method of luring chipmunks into traps.

Check your traps regularly. The sooner you move the chipmunk after it gets trapped, the better.

Be sure to stay at least five miles from home and release the chipmunk into suitable habitat. You can also check your local laws for advice on how to properly release them.

3 – Protect the bird feeder

Another major attraction for chipmunks is bird feeding equipment, especially those that are close to the ground. They tend to be attracted to birdseed that falls from the feeder. It has become their usual food source and main attraction.

Be sure to clean around the feeder regularly. Remove any scattered seeds that might attract chipmunks to the area. You can even replace that seed with seeds that chipmunks and squirrels don’t like (think thistle).

It is important to place your feeder 15 to 30 feet from any structure on your property such as houses, sheds, garages, etc. Proximity to these structures simply means that they have quick and reliable access to both food and shelter.

Epilogue

Don’t let chipmunks ruin your hard work by digging up your garden or cluttering your yard. Take some of the measures mentioned above and you can keep these cute but disruptive little creatures out of your garden.

Prevention is always easier than elimination, so it’s better to take precautions than wait for problems to appear. You should use humane disposal techniques to get rid of chipmunks rather than just exterminating them immediately.
