Multi-read content how to create texture with paint

ViaCaroline Nelsoninartistic guide > Drawing tutorial

Artists selling original works (in a sense) will always have to compete with the seemingly endless print market. Luckily for us, discerning collectors appreciate unique surfaces that show a piece is original.

This is the main reason why I like to give a lot of textures to my paintings: soEverybodycan immediately see that they are original.

The following paragraphs explain my three-step technique for adding the amazing, thick painted texturefor any acrylic paint. There’s only one secret: texture comes first.

Create textures

After drawing a basic sketch of flowers on my canvas, I mixed an equal amountacrylic heavy gelandacrylic pattern stickers. Then, following the lines I drew, I sculpted the petals, flower centers and leaves with a small palette knife.

(NOTE: If you want a more abstract texture, this is a great technique topaper model stickers.)

Texture painting

After drying for about two hours, my textured flowers were ready to paint.

I like to draw fast, use really vividacrylic paint colorfor my poppies, like Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange and Napthol Red, with darker tones of Bordeaux Red and Violet for shaded areas.

Working quickly isn’t a problem because the textures allow me to easily fix mistakes from the last step. I don’t usually find that too much detail is needed, just let the textures (and bright colors) do the work.

Glaze the image to create contrast

When the paint is completely dry again, it’s time to glaze.

I covered the entire canvas with doused burnt rags, then quickly lifted it up with a damp paper towel. This process allows the burnt shadow to remain in the valleys and on the edges of the flower while being removed from the raised petals.

It’s amazing how a simple glazing technique on thick acrylic can really make those flowers pop out of the picture frame. And after the final finish to emphasize the edges of the petals, this painting is ready for protective varnishing.

Finished Texture Painting

This is the final work – you can see it’s much more than the other photos shown!

Remember, no matter what subject you want to paint, it’s very easy to add texture and drama to your artwork using this three-step process.
