deck building tips add a seam and extra joist

The handyman’s family

Sewing a bridge

The traditional way most builders dobuild a terraceis to randomize the wobbly joints. The result is end to enddeck board1-1/2″ split. the thickness of each joist. This can cause problems, especially withwooden floor. With only 3/4 in. nailed surface, the fastener will cause the ends to split. And since the end table needs to be tight, untreated wood will rot.

We use a faster, more efficient method of hardware we call splicing. He simply places a seam (or seams, on larger decks) strategically and uses boards of equal length for each section. Each seam is a sandwich consisting of a raised vertical floor with spacers on both sides.

The benefits are many. This is faster than random concatenation; all ends of deck are 1-1/2″ solid. framed, so it reduces loin splits; and you can leave the 1/4-in. space out the ends so the terminal seeds can dry out after getting wet.

The vertical decking board is for aesthetics only. It gives everything a planned and polished look. And there is almost no waste. If we have to build 20 feet wide.platform, we’ll make it about 19 feet long. 6 inches. and use every 10 feet. floor on both halves. This allows for an inch overhang and cuts off some bad ends.

Splice also works well for solid composite floors, which are less long. For example, if Ibuild a composite deck, 12 and 20 feet. length may be the only option. For 16 feet wide.platform, I can hang it to have a four foot “sidewalk” in the middle so there is no waste. Of course, it all depends on the design and the owner. But think about it next time to find the best approach. Here’s our guide to all things treated wood.
