Table setting

Setting the table is one of the most important parts of the dining experience. Table settings can be divided into two categories: informal and formal. Formal meals are usually reserved for weeknight meals, and formal meals are often for holiday meals, special celebrations, and receptions for honored guests.

According to Etiquette Scholar, an online encyclopedia of etiquette and manners, “At informal meals, all the cutlery is placed on the table at the same time. At the host’s option, dessert utensils may be brought to the table on a dessert plate. Here is the standard table setup for a three-course meal. Note the basic “outside” rule. The flat disc that will be used last is located right next to the disc you are using.

Two forks should be placed to the left of the plate. The fork farthest from the plate is the salad fork. The fork next to the plate is reserved for the main course. The table knife is always placed on the right side of the plate. The blade should point towards the disc. Also, the spoon should be placed to the far right of the knife. Water glasses and wine glasses should be placed directly above the knife, to the right of the plate.

Formal dining table settings are designed with more intricacy and attention to detail. The etiquette specialist explains, “To avoid clutter, the general rule for any table is to include no more than three utensils on each side of the plate at a time. The exception is the oyster (or seafood) fork, which can be placed to the right of the last spoon even if it is the fourth utensil from the right of the plate. On the table there should be five glasses, three forks and three knives arranged as shown in the infographic. If you really want to impress your dinner guests, take the time to reserve a formal dining table.

Table decoration

Once the table is set with plates, forks, knives, glasses, etc., decorate it with decor to create the perfect ambiance for your meal. Decorating the table space with a centerpiece of fresh flowers, silk flowers, dishes, glass, fruit or candles will provide a warm welcome to your guests or a seasonal touch. Adornments can also work, but only if they’re appropriate at the moment. This creates the opportunity to use heirlooms or even DIY projects for decoration.

To focus, the Ritual Scholar offers three tips to remember.

  • Don’t let a center overwhelm a table.
  • Don’t have a center plate blocking the view of people sitting across from each other.
