Multi-read content how to wrap a long extension cord

Do your extension cords look like this when you take them out, even though they’re beautifully wrapped?

Tangled extension cord on man in garage angry face.

Today I’m going to show you a trick to get rid of tangled and knotted extension cords in your life. It’s called Contractor’s Wrap and I learned it from a scout leader who worked as an HVAC man when my mustache was just peach fuzz.

Here’s how it works.

Step 1: Connecting men and women together

Man connecting male female end of extension cord.

Step 2: Tie an overhand knot at the end

Wrap extension cord overhand knot.

Step 3: Make a sequence of sliding buttons in a row

Reach your hand through the loop of the overhand knot you just made and grab the two strings underneath.

Pull both strands through the loop and form another loop.

Run your hand through the loop you just created. Grasp the two strings underneath and pull them through the loop to form another loop. Repeat until you reach the end of the rope.

Step 4: Finish

Once you reach the doubled end (top image), you’ll want to pull it through your last loop to form an overhand knot.

final product

Your finished product will look like this. Simply hang it up for storage.

To clarify

To untie your scarf, pull the end to release the overhand knot you’ve completed, then continue pulling. Because you have a sequence of sliding buttons in a row, everything will magically happen without messing up.

Double for longer strings

If you have an extension cord that is 50 feet or longer, I recommend doubling yours. Instead of pulling two strands through the loops, you’ll have four. It is important that you grab and pull through all four strands when creating the loop
